MANAGING DIRECTOR OF FARRANS, DOMINIC LAVERY, SHARES HIS THOUGHTS ON THE IMPORTANT ROLE THE CEF HAS PLAYED IN

THEIR COMPANY.... Farrans

F arrans and the CEF have a lot in common – not least the decade that both organisations started. As the Federation celebrates its 75th year and we approach our 80th year, we are taking this opportunity to recognise a long and successful partnership with the voice of the construction industry. We first became a member of the CEF in August 1982, at a time when Farrans was growing quickly and evolving into the innovative building and civil engineering contractor that it is now. Through the Federation we became connected to the local industry and found a responsible voice which has been crucial to the sector as we enjoyed the good times and pushed through the tough times. On numerous occasions our company has been supported when the CEF has lobbied our local government in relation to capital works programmes, tendering procedures and contractual issues. In the last few months in the face of the pandemic, they have again sought Executive clarity on our behalf. Having held the President position and now sitting on the Federation Council and various committees at the CEF, Farrans has been inspired

and motivated to change by important industry wide learnings in areas such as mental health and encouraging more women into construction roles. Knowing that we have this relationship with the CEF has given our company the ability to focus on the day to day demands. Our live projects currently total more than £1.2 billion and we have a strong pipeline in place as we move into 2021. Operating across the UK and Ireland and employing over 500 people, we have two distinct divisions which complement each other. Our civil engineering team is behind a wealth of roads, bridges, water, marine and renewable energy projects. These range from the A6 Dual Carriageway between Randalstown and Castledawson to the high profile Edinburgh Trams and significant framework agreements with clients such as Northern Ireland Water, Irish Water and Highways England. Our building division operates across leisure, health, education and living spaces and has secured impressive framework agreements with SCAPE and ESFA. We are behind landmark projects such as the North West Transport Hub, City Quays III at Belfast Harbour and the

stunning South Lake Leisure Centre in Craigavon which opens this November. Perhaps the greatest impact of the CEF, however, is imbuing a sense of responsibility on its 800 member companies in Northern Ireland. We take this seriously at Farrans. We tell our people, customers and end-users that making a genuine, positive difference is our company’s mission. Earlier this year we reacted quickly to deliver three new inpatient wards at Altnagelvin Hospitality in response to the COVID-19 surge. We have a CEF award-winning people agenda, empowering our employees to realise their potential. Over 87 percent of our workforce has undertaken mental health training. So to the CEF on your 75th anniversary: congratulations on your achievements to date. We thank you for inspiring a strong sense of responsibility in our industry and look forward to a continuing partnership in the future.
