U K Concrete, part of the roadmap to move beyond net zero by 2050 – removingmore carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it emits each year. Commenting on the roadmap, Gordon Best, Regional Director MPANI says, “The Mineral Products sector in Northern Ireland are Mineral Products Association (MPA), has developed a supportive and committed to the Net Zero target and the transition to lower / zero carbon fuels. Most cement used in Northern Ireland is manufactured by the companies signed up to this roadmap. However, the concrete and cement industry as one sector alone cannot deliver net zero and we will only be able to go beyond net zero with concerted support fromGovernment, as well as with significant changes across the wider construction, energy and transportation sectors. “MPANI are working with Members and other stakeholders on the transition to lower / zero carbon through electrification, use of zero carbon fuels such as hydrogen, expanding the use of renewable energy for crushing, screening and manufacturing of materials. “Already a number of quarries in NI have multiple wind turbines on their sites thus greatly reducing their carbon footprint. B arry Mairs, Managing Director of GBS Roofing, ran from Portrush to Belfast during the summer, raising over £7,800 for the Children’s Cancer Unit Charity, based at The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. Barry, who completed the 60+mile run in just 11 hours, says, “Charities are facing huge fundraising challenges at the moment, so it is important that we continue to help in any way we can. The Children’s Cancer Unit provides vital specialist care and support to children and their families during the most difficult time of their lives.
“GBS Roofing had adopted The Children’s Cancer Unit as its charity for 2020 but the pandemic meant some of our fundraising events had to be postponed.” Barry’s fundraising smashed their target of £4,000 to provide the Unit with an interactive robot for the classroom.
