HOW THE VEHICLES WE ENJOY TODAY GAVE US THE FREEDOM TO TRAVEL

for what he accomplished, during WWII, his name was stripped from textbooks, and all his work was destroyed by Nazi forces due to his Jewish descent. After this tragic event, nearly all of Marcus’ work was credited over to Benz, but many people still remember Marcus as the true inventor of the first gas- powered vehicle. The first automobiles that were created didn’t have doors, turn signals, round steering wheels, or even windshields, and it wasn’t until the late 1800s that they started manufacturing cars. One of the first companies that began the automobile industry was the Duryea Motor Wagon Company. It was founded in the 1890s and was also one of the first to produce and sell gas-powered vehicles. In the years that followed, automobiles greatly improved, especially through the efforts of Henry Ford. With the improvement of the assembly line, Ford mass-produced his Model T, which was far cheaper than most automobiles at the time. The Model T came with a windshield, doors, and round steering wheels. It wasn’t until the late 1930s that the first turn signals were added to the car by Buick, and, from that point on, more and more features

The Fourth of July marks a point in history that shaped the United States into what it is today. While thinking about the freedoms and rights we gained as citizens, I can’t help but think of how far we’ve come as a nation in the years since 1776. As a country, we live by what was fought for so intensely many years ago. cars, trucks, and SUVs give us. The true definition of freedom is a teenager passing their license test and driving alone for the first time. During this time of year, when our country celebrates small liberties like the freedom to drive a car, I find myself thinking about the history of automobiles. Many people believe that the first gas- powered car was invented in the 1800s by Karl Benz, but that’s not entirely true. Between 1864 and 1870, a man named Siegfried Marcus used a liquid-fueled combustion engine on a handcart. Although his creation was far from perfect, Marcus was the first person to succeed in moving a vehicle using gasoline, and the vehicle was dubbed the “Marcus Car.” However, while Marcus was revered throughout his lifetime As someone who works with vehicles every day, I’m also reminded of the freedom our

were added to the automobile. Throughout the 1950s, features such as cruise control, three-point seatbelts, and power steering were added, and in 1973, the first passenger airbag was installed by Oldsmobile in their “Tornado” model. Since it was first created and grew in popularity throughout the states, the automobile gave our citizens freedom that no other mode of transportation could give them. People didn’t have to wait for trains or trollies to get from one destination to another; instead, they could hop into their Model T and drive wherever they wanted. Today, vehicles still represent the freedom to go anywhere, any time. And during the month when this country celebrates American freedom, it’s a great opportunity to appreciate the evolution of the car as a whole.

Summer Swimming Safety

3 Tips for Swimming in Open Water

it is. If you cannot confirm what is under the surface (and the spot is not a known diving location), don’t risk it. It may be okay to swim or wade, but jumping is out of the question. Along these same lines, be VERY careful around bodies of slow-moving or standing water. These can house dangerous microbes and other contaminants that can make you ill and potentially be deadly. WATCH FOR RIP CURRENTS. These can occur at any beach without warning. They pull swimmers away from shore and are strong enough that even excellent swimmers struggle to get through them. In fact, rip currents are behind nearly 80% of beach rescues. Keep an eye on the foam at the surface of the water. If it seems to suddenly pull away from the beach, there’s a good chance a rip current is lurking beneath. If you find yourself in a rip current, it’s crucial to remain calm and avoid expending energy swimming directly back to shore. Instead, try swimming parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current. THE HOVER CAR The Air-Car, developed by Curtiss-Wright in 1959, was a vision of the future. Although far from what people think of as a hover car today, the vehicle could hover several inches above the ground, move evenly over flat surfaces like pavement and water, and accelerate to about 38 miles per hour. The Army Transportation Research Command purchased two of these vehicles in 1960 for evaluation, but they were deemed inadequate, and the idea was abandoned.

risks, as these environments are not nearly as controlled as public, club, or backyard pools. Everyone should follow these tips to have a fun and safe time cooling off under the summer sun. NEVER SWIM ALONE. When you swim in virtually any body of water, having someone there to keep an eye on you can be a lifesaver: the more people, the better. Stick to bodies of water with a professional lifeguard on duty when possible, though that’s not always an option. When swimming in open bodies of water, have a “designated spotter” to keep an eye on the swimmers. This way, you’re prepared if anything bad happens. It’s also a great idea to keep flotation devices nearby, such as life jackets, life rings, foam boards, etc. KNOW WHAT YOU’RE GETTING INTO. Sometimes, it’s next to impossible to see what’s under the surface of the water. If you are unfamiliar with a body of water, don’t jump or dive in without knowing how deep

There’s nothing like taking a dip in a nearby pond, lake, or even the ocean. For many, it’s a summertime tradition. However, swimming in open bodies of water brings certain safety

Since the late 1800s, cars have gone through several extraordinary changes. However, some of these changes were unable to sell due to a lack of interest from manufacturers and a lack of funds. Here are three unique car inventions that aimed to improve automobiles and cars but didn’t quite make the cut. FASCINATING CAR INVENTIONS That We Don’t See in Today’s Modern Age

THE GYRO-X This two-wheeled vehicle was developed between 1966 and 1967 by Alex Tremulis, a famous car designer, and Thomas Summers, a gyroscope expert. The Gyro-X used a gyroscope to stay balanced on its two wheels and was half the size of other vehicles at the time. The two creators hoped their invention would be the solution to many problems by providing more stability, preventing skidding or sliding, and being more aerodynamic. Sadly, only one prototype was made before Tremulis and Summer’s company went under. But that prototype still exists today, traveling from one car show to the next.

THE FIFTH WHEEL Parallel parking can be frustrating to just about everyone, and in 1951, the maker of the Cadillac had an idea to solve that problem. A fifth wheel was added to the back of a vehicle in the trunk, and the driver could lower it onto the street below. The driver could then rotate the end of the vehicle to make backing out of or sliding into a tight space far easier than attempting to maneuver the car back and forth. However, the device was often glitchy and too cumbersome for manufacturers to include in their designs.

While many of these ideas are shelved for the time being, with the continuous advances in technology, these unique inventions could potentially be revisited

and made into better versions.
