DON’T LET FEAR HOLD YOU BACK From the Smile You Deserve

I completely understand your fears about visiting the dentist. The loss of control, the anticipation of pain, and the misunderstanding of what’s going on are terrifying prospects for many people. If you had it your way, you’d never do anything that makes you scared. But, when it comes to oral hygiene, unfortunately, always having it your way isn’t the healthiest route to take. When two contradicting scenarios collide — the need for dental services and the fear of getting those services — it can feel like a hopeless situation. But this is exactly why I started the Texas Sedation Dental & Implant Center. Working in this industry has taught me one of the most important things you can learn in life: Fear is inevitable. It takes many forms, and sometimes, overcoming it seems impossible. But I’ve also learned that if you let fear take hold of your well-being, you lose out on all the other things in life you deserve, like health, confidence, and happiness. So, we’ve developed our mission around this idea: We want to give you the most confident smile your mirror has ever seen by taking the fear out of dentistry. We realize your fear of visiting the dentist could have come from painful past experiences or a simple loss of control over your situation. These experiences may have even led to a feeling of shame. But we firmly believe a healthy smile and the confidence it can instill should never come at such a traumatic cost. That’s why we’re proud to offer IV sedation dentistry. That means all your dental work with us, whether it’s hygienic, cosmetic, or otherwise, is done while you’re under sedation, so there’s no need to feel fear when you sit in our chair. Our talented team goes above and beyond to create a

safe, secure, and welcoming environment for every client during every service. Our most important mission is to strike down your fear of the situation so you have the same opportunity as everyone else to feel the confidence of a beautiful smile. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve felt plenty of fear in my life. With six kids, you can bet the moments before each of their arrivals were filled with a single terrifying question: Can I do this? There were times when I thought I couldn’t. But pushing through that fear and learning how to face it has led to some of the most blissful moments in my life. Now, we all face our fears together. As avid sports enthusiasts, my family frequently participates in outdoor activities like wakeboarding and mountain biking. Every time I sit in the water waiting for the line to pull me to my feet, or every time I take a deep breath from the seat of my bike at the top of the mountain, that question bubbles to the surface again: Can I do this? But when I’m back in the boat or standing at the bottom of the mountain, it’s the thrill of knowing I was able to overcome that fear that keeps me coming back every time. Facing my fear allows me to lead a happy life. We’re here to let you know you can do this. You can overcome your fear of dental procedures at Texas Sedation Dental & Implant Center because we’re with you every step of the way. We understand your needs, where your fear comes from, and how to help you overcome it. If you put your fear in our hands, we’ll help you face it so you can have the smile you deserve. -Dr. Travis Kendall

FEELING SAD ? Ways to Fight Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that people experience every fall and winter. If you find yourself feeling blue as the days become shorter and darker, know there are things you can do to boost your mood until spring returns.

a neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of well-being and happiness. Getting just a few minutes of sunlight a day through a walk or short jog can make all the difference. If you live in an area where the winters are bleak, cloudy, and dark, sunlight can be harder to come by. But technology has you covered: You can purchase “sun lamps,” which simulate sunlight without the damaging UV rays. Just set up a sun lamp in your workspace or living area and feel your mood lift. MAINTAINYOUR ROUTINE Often, it can be difficult to stick with your daily routine during the cooler months. It may be harder to wake up on time in the morning to work out, or it may be too cold outside to go on your daily run. Luckily, you can find small ways to mitigate this.

INCREASEYOUR ACTIVITY Keeping your body active can increase your energy levels, help you sleep, reduce anxiety, and boost your self-esteem. Summit Medical Group states that a person who exercises for 30–60 minutes a day can manage or avoid SAD easier than a person who does not exercise regularly. When you participate in physical activity, your body releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins, which have a morphine-like effect on your brain. If exercising outdoors is not ideal, consider swimming, walking, or dancing instead. GET SOME SUN Exposure to sunlight is also significantly beneficial for people suffering from SAD. Sunlight helps your body produce adequate amounts of serotonin,

For example, invest in a sunrise alarm clock, which gently wakes you up with a simulated sunrise, or shop for high-quality thermal workout gear. If you continue to suffer from SAD and feel there’s no end in sight, it’s important to seek help from professionals. They can determine the best treatment options available for you.

WHAT IS IV SEDATION DENTISTRY? It Could Be the Answer You’re Looking For

If you avoid the dentist due to feelings of dread about sitting in that chair, then IV sedation dentistry could be a great solution for you. Whether you have sensitive teeth, a fear of pain, an overactive gag reflex, or a lot of dental work you need done, we want to let you know these reasons no longer need to keep you from getting the services you need. Many dentists offer pills, oral numbing agents, or mild sedation, like laughing gas, to their patients. These can fend off some of the pain

associated with visiting the dentist, but they still leave room for uncomfortable sensations and anxiety to surface. It can also take up to an hour to feel the full effects of these drugs, and they can result in a longer recovery period after the procedures are done. Texas Sedation Dental & Implant Center is one of the few practices in the country with the qualifications to administer IV sedation to its patients regularly. The process is simple but effective for those who need the extra care it

provides. IV sedation fluids are administered through a vein rather than by gas or pill, allowing the drugs to take effect much more quickly. This type of administration also means the level of sedation can continually be adjusted as needed. Patients remain conscious while work is performed, but they rarely remember any of the procedure or feel any pain or discomfort. While under sedation, the patient is kept on oxygen, and their vital signs are monitored to ensure their safety. With a dentist like Dr. Kendall, the dangers of IV sedation dentistry are minimal. He has years of experience and hundreds of hours of continuing dental education. He performs successful IV sedation nearly every day and has been awarded the Master of the College of Sedation by the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. Dr. Kendall and his staff have the expertise to help you overcome your anxiety and get the services you need, but if you still feel unsure, contact our office today for a free consultation.

The term “dental implant” may sound like a complicated and invasive procedure, but, as they’ve become more commonplace for a variety of patients, the process has become more routine and effective. Many conventional procedures require professional adjustments, full replacement over time, or the frequent use of adhesives to prevent the tooth from slipping inside your mouth. Full dental implants don’t require this maintenance and look and feel more natural inside your mouth. If you need a tooth replaced, a dental implant could be a great solution for you. The process of receiving a dental implant has become so streamlined that it’s now considered a minimally invasive procedure. First, the root of your missing tooth is removed and replaced with a small titanium post that’s fastened to the jawbone. Then, the implant is capped with a fake tooth, or crown, that is fully customized so its size, shape, and color flawlessly match the other teeth in your mouth. During the healing process, the implant fuses to the jaw bone, which keeps it firmly and permanently in place. The new tooth may take several weeks to several months to fully fuse and heal inside your mouth, but the end result is worth the extra recovery time. Dental implants are often the best tooth replacement solution because they rarely require any further work from you or your dentist after the initial procedure. You’ll never need to take them out to apply adhesive or to clean them, and you’ll never need to worry about the tooth itself decaying. With continued proper oral hygiene and care, your implants can last for decades. The process for a single tooth implant versus multiple tooth implants varies slightly, but both are minimally invasive and routine procedures that Texas Sedation Dental & Implant Center performs every day. Whatever type of implant you might need, be sure to schedule a free consultation in our office so we can best assess the right choice for you. The History Behind Christmas Lights

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT Why Do We Hang Christmas Lights?

The first string of twinkling lights illuminating your neighbor’s house is always a telltale sign of the upcoming seasonal festivities. Christmas lights are a holiday staple, but have you ever wondered where this beloved tradition started? The tradition of hanging lights on the tree originally started with candles. Because this posed an immense fire hazard, Edward Hibberd Johnson, a close friend of Thomas Edison and vice president of the Edison Electric Light Company, vowed to find a better way to decorate Christmas trees with light. In December 1882, three years after Edison’s invention of the lightbulb in November 1879, Johnson hand-wired 80 red, white, and blue lightbulbs together and wound them around a Christmas tree in his parlor window. A passing reporter saw the spectacle and declared in the Detroit Post and Tribune, “One can hardly imagine anything prettier.”

Johnson continued this tradition, increasing the number of lights each year and eventually putting them up outside. But because electricity was still a new concept, many years passed before the fad took off for regular Americans. In 1923, President Calvin Coolidge began the tradition of lighting the National Christmas Tree, which spurred the idea of selling stringed lights commercially. By the 1930s, families everywhere were buying boxes of bulbs by the dozen. Today, an estimated 150 million Christmas lights are sold in America each year, decorating 80 million homes and consuming 6% of the nation’s electricity every December. Whether you’ll be putting up your own lights or appreciating the most impressive light displays in your neighborhood or town, let the glow fill you with joy this season. Just don’t leave them up until February!
