Stay Healthy by Controlling the Controllables in Your Life

I’m writing this article to you on May 20, so circumstances may have changed, and hopefully improved, when you receive this newsletter. We’ve been taking care of many of you since this pandemic began. I do understand that some of you have decided to wait to come in for your care. Be assured that we continue to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines to keep our office environment safe for you. Remember that your adjustments help reduce stress, keep you out of pain, and strengthen your immune response by increasing the function of your nervous system. Strengthening your immune response helps to defend your body from invaders. Plus, you just feel better. We look forward to seeing you when you feel ready. In the meantime, I want to provide you with useful information while lifting your spirits. While I remain concerned about our current health situation, I am not distressed. Knowledge has the power to help all of us control the controllables in our life! I was inspired by a story I saw about Navy SEALs, the most highly trained warriors on the planet. One SEAL related that, in battle, they control only their immediate environment. They take immediate and decisive action controlling what is right in front of them; they are less concerned about a threat 2 miles away. You may be concerned about the stock market or news reports, but you can only control what’s immediately in front of you. Once a day, I get informed on the broader picture of

what’s going on during this challenging time, but generally, I’m focused on the actions I can take in my immediate environment to stay healthy, both physically and emotionally. Find your trusted sources and protect yourself from fearmongering and misinformation. Fear produces stress, and stress wears you down. Listen to your favorite music, watch a funny movie, read a good book, take a walk, or call a trusted friend or family member. Stay connected. Help others. Ask for help when needed. I’m paying particular attention to my nutrition . I want to feel energetic and strengthen my immunity, not put on “pandemic pounds.” A high-nutrient diet is the best “medicine” to keep well. I follow a healthy keto/intermittent fasting eating plan , which means I’ve eliminated processed foods, sugar, and chemicals like added hormones, preservatives, etc. I focus on nutrient-dense foods like dark leafy greens, hormone-free meats and fish, berries, raw nuts and seeds, and whole-fat dairy products like organic eggs, yogurt, and healthy fats. I don’t snack between meals or eat starchy carbs. Ask me about the simple booklet “Healthy Keto and Intermittent Fasting.” I’ll help guide you as needed. The gyms are closed right now, so I put together a 15-minute high-intensity interval training twice a day, morning and evening, which includes basic body weight exercises like pullups, pushups, swats, crunches, and spine stretches. Exercising decreases stress by stimulating feel-good chemicals called

neurotransmitters. I can guide you to the exercises that work for your body.

Regular routines have been disrupted, so I go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, getting eight hours of sleep. This routine helps my body stay regulated and calms my mind. Creating a daily to-do list helps me stay focused on my priorities. Life has a way of pulling us off course, so remember to imagine what you want to have , what you have to do, and who you have to be to bring your dreams into reality! Strengthening your immune response and creating a healthy lifestyle is the most effective way of staying well! We will all get through this challenging time together. As always, I’m available to help you as needed.

In knowledge and health,

The Solution: The idea is to avoid becoming a host by strengthening your immune system. I take and recommend the following supplements to do so: Standard Process Supplements: Many store-bought supplements are synthetic, lab-altered, pharmaceutically re-engineered chemical fractions of foods. Because your body does not recognize them as a food source, absorption is low, and a majority is left unprocessed and released during urination. Standard Process supplements are whole food supplements containing the natural vitamins, trace minerals, and enzymes recognized by your body as food and absorbed. Individualized Testing for an appropriate dosage is available in my office, eliminating the guesswork and saving you money. Immuplex: Every flu season, my staff and I take this supplement. It is designed to help stimulate production of antibodies, those killer cells that attack invaders. As a result, my staff and I do not get the flu. Many of you also report less sickness while taking this supplement.

Strengthening Your Immune System (Part 2)

One of the best ways for all of us to stay healthy is to create a healthy lifestyle that strengthens our immune system and protects us from sickness. This is not just for pandemics, like COVID-19. Did you ever notice that not everyone gets the flu or catches a cold in the winter? Those who don’t get infected have a stronger immune system. The Problem: A virus is an infective agent looking for a host: you. It is not actually alive. Its sole purpose is to

multiply to produce more viruses in your body, and the result is sickness. When exposed to a virus, your immune system produces antibodies, which are killer cells that attack invaders. They’re like a unique police force inside your body, going to work when needed. Over time, your body builds a memory of which antibodies are needed for each invader, helping you build a strong, on- call immune response.

The Medicalizati of Back Pain

I read an article dated Jan. 18, 2020, in The Economist, a magazine from London, that’s aimed at business leaders across the world. It outlined the huge amounts spent on treatment for back and neck pain with little if any benefit to patients. The Problem: We all know that back pain can be miserable to experience. In most countries with reliable research, back pain is the top cause of disability. Costs for treatment have been rising. As far back as 2013, a study showed $88 billion was spent on medical treatment for back and neck pain in America. This figure is not that far short of the $115 billion spent on cancer treatment. According to this article, a great deal of this money spent seems sadly to do little good. According to studies cited in this article, a definitive physical cause , such as a fracture, tumor, or infection was found in only 5%–15% of people with

back pain. All the rest of these back pain patients were labeled as “nonspecific” with no known cause. This inability to identify a definitive physical cause for back and neck pain throws into doubt a great deal of medical treatment currently used in America. Evidence of ineffectiveness has not stopped doctors from writing prescriptions for over-the-counter drugs and opioids, despite the associated risks of side effects, addiction, and death. In 2011, Cigna, a large American insurance company, ran a follow-up study on spinal fusion patients. They found that two years after treatment, 87% of patients with back pain were still in pain that was severe enough that they needed ongoing medication and other treatment; 15% had more surgery. The Solution: As a chiropractic patient in my office, a definitive physical cause for your back and neck pain had to be identified in order for me to accept

Cataplex D: This supplement strengthens bones, which includes antibody production, those killer cells, and increases calcium levels in the blood, which suppress viruses. Cataplex C: Artificial vitamin C/ascorbic acid is not as effective as this vitamin C complex, which increases the ability of your body to absorb and utilize this product. In China, intravenous vitamin C was used to bring COVID-19 patients out of intensive care. SP Zinc: Zinc has been shown to weaken the cell wall of a virus reducing its ability to multiply. Zinc strengthens your immune response.

you as a patient. The sore spot in your body had to be found, spinal motion limitations had to be measured, reflex changes in your leg lengths were identified, misalignment of the spinal joints were found, and compressed (pinched) nerves were detected. Chiropractors are spine specialist trained to identify the physical cause of back and neck pain. We are spinal mechanics, not chemists. Of course, drugs and surgery can save lives. However, drugs and surgery applied as a solution to back and neck pain is being proven to be ineffective, risky, and expensive. Chiropractic relief, correction, and maintenance care not only gets you out of pain without the risks of drug reactions or surgery, but it also contributes to you having a healthy, pain-free life. PAGE 4 Bird-Watching for Beginners

Why May Is the Best Month to Start BIRD-WATCHING FOR BEGINNERS

Bird-watching is like a lifelong scavenger hunt that you can play anywhere on Earth. The activity provides a mixture of science, travel, and beauty, and it’s a chance to get outside for feathered adventures and quiet reflection. The month of May is a great time of year to go birding because rising temperatures prompt spring migration. So if you’re eager to begin bird- watching, there’s no better time than now. Here are some tips to get started. EDUCATE YOURSELF Thousands of species of birds span all corners of the globe. That’s why finding them is an exciting prospect — there’s no end to the hunt! Start by researching birds that are native to your location. Purchase a field guide with pictures of each bird and maps of their range and use it to figure out where different birds live. From there, it’s easy to pick your first spotting goal. You can even get yourself extra excited by watching a few bird documentaries. GEAR UP One of the best things about birding is that you don’t need a lot of equipment to do it. As long as you’ve got your field guide and comfortable walking shoes, the only other thing you’ll need is a pair of binoculars. And they don’t have to be fancy. As long as they can zoom in on faraway trees and perches, they’ll work for now. You can always upgrade later.

GO EXPLORING Your very first birding excursion is important because you don’t want to be overwhelmed or underwhelmed. So use your field guide to home in on a single bird and go find it. It may be local, or you can plan a trip to a specific bird’s natural habitat. Stay focused and don’t get distracted by other species. The thrill that comes with spotting your first bird will keep you coming back to find the rest. Bird-watching is a wonderful hobby because it’s easy to get started and can last a lifetime. As long as you can walk, drive, or look out a window, you can be a birder. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and find some birds!
