Courtside Chronicles A LESSON IN TEAMWORK AND PERSEVERANCE

As the excitement builds for the NBA Finals this June, now is the perfect time to reflect on the NBA’s storied past, its humble beginnings, and the surprising ways it intersects with my life — personally and professionally. Just as the NBA has evolved from modest origins into a global powerhouse, its journey mirrors the growth and challenges we often see in business and life. The National Basketball Association (NBA) started as a fledgling league and has grown into a cornerstone of American culture and a beacon of teamwork and perseverance worldwide. Growing up, I was a die-hard New York Knicks fan, reveling in the glory of their ‘69 and ‘73 championships. Those early years of cheering for the Knicks instilled in me a love for the game and an appreciation for the power of a unified team striving toward a common goal. However, since attending college and making my home in Indiana, my allegiance has shifted to the Indiana Pacers. A personal connection further solidified this transition — my son’s career with the

Pacers as the Director of Team Operations. His role has brought the game closer to my heart, making the Pacers feel like an extension of my family. For the past six years, having my son work within the NBA has been nothing short of phenomenal. It is not just about the games, but about being part of something larger than yourself. The Pacers have repeatedly shown that with determination and teamwork, even the unlikely becomes possible (2023 NBA Cup In-season Tournament Finals!) — miracles can indeed happen, as we have seen with their unbelievable 2023–24 season, improving from 11th place to 6th and making the playoffs for the first time since the bubble season of the summer of 2020. This brings me to the life lessons basketball can teach us all. Whether you are playing on the court, working behind the scenes, or cheering from the stands, the principles of teamwork, dedication, and perseverance are universal. These are the same values we uphold at our law firm, and I recommend other business owners embrace these when planning for the future. In business, just as in basketball, it is about setting up strategies to secure a win for today and many seasons to come. It is about ensuring that all pieces work together harmoniously, much like a well-coordinated team on the court.

Sports, in general, have always held a deep connection in my life. Last summer, I wrote about

MASTERING THE MARATHON 3 Ways to Build Healthy Habits

No. 2 — Set Specific Goals Setting clear, attainable goals can easily motivate you. Rather than vague aspirations, like “exercise more” or “eat healthy,” define your goals into objectives like “walk 20 minutes every day” or “eat vegetables with every meal.” These goals can be a road map for your journey as you can track your progress as time goes on. Consistently achieving these milestones will solidify your commitment to your new healthy habits. No. 3 — Stay Consistent Consistency is at the core of building a habit — establishing a routine that aligns with your health goals. A structured routine supports habit formation, and consistency reinforces it. If you miss a day of your new habit, a routine helps you bounce back into the structure without being hard on yourself. As you continue building healthy habits, consistency will help ingrain them into your lifestyle.

The journey to healthier habits is a marathon, not a sprint, and as such, it is a daunting task. Here are three tips to help you begin your journey, whether your goal is to lose weight, improve your diet, work out regularly, or just establish a more balanced lifestyle. No. 1 — Start Small Start your journey to better health in small ways, as attempting drastic change can be overwhelming. You should first focus on incremental adjustments to your routine. If your goal is to exercise more, start with short walks in the evenings after dinner or take the stairs in the office instead of elevators. These changes lay the foundation for long-term success. Starting small will make it easier to transition to larger changes, like adding a morning workout or speeding up your evening walk into a jog.

You can lay the groundwork for lasting, healthy habits by embracing these three tips. Small, gradual changes become the foundation for continued success, while clear objectives serve as milestones to celebrate success along the way. So, take joy in the process, celebrate the victories, and know that building these healthy habits is a marathon worth running.

HOW THE CORPORATE TRANSPARENCY ACT AFFECTS YOUR BUSINESS

Why Is It Important? Compliance with the CTA is not optional. Small-business owners need to proactively understand and comply with the requirements to avoid these severe consequences. Deadline for Complying. CTA requires that existing entities created prior to Jan. 1, 2024, must file the disclosures by Dec. 31, 2024. For new entities established in 2024 and thereafter, disclosures must be filed within ninety (90) days after the creation of the new entity. Next Steps for Business Owners 1. In May 2024, we will be sending you a further notice on how we can assist you in complying with the CTA to ensure your business meets the new legal requirements. We look forward to assisting you.

We want to alert all our readers about the new Corporate Transparency Act (CTA), which introduces significant changes for small businesses across the U.S. As a firm dedicated to supporting the needs of business owners, we believe it’s crucial to understand how this new legislation will impact your operations and compliance requirements. The CTA, which became effective Jan. 1, 2024 , is primarily designed to combat money laundering, the financing of terrorism, and other illicit activities that can be facilitated through anonymous shell companies. For the first time, certain U.S. companies must disclose information about their beneficial owners to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network of the Department of Treasury. Who Is Affected? The act mainly targets smaller corporations, LLPs, LLCs, and other privately owned entities. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, “an individual qualifies as a beneficial owner if they directly or indirectly have a significant ownership stake in a company.” Whether you significantly influence the business’ operations or own at least 25% of the company’s shares, you likely are required to disclose vital information. This criteria covers many small businesses that may not previously have been subject to stringent reporting requirements. There are various exceptions to the requirement that you should review to determine whether the CTA applies to you.

More than 43 million adults have student loan debt. These loans are not easy to pay off, but it’s much easier with some strategic financial planning. This method uses a six-month grace period, high-yield savings accounts, and good savings habits. The lowdown on loan grace period. With any financial planning, the first step is to get a clear picture of the situation, which is no different. You want to calculate your minimum monthly payment. There are many calculators online just for this purpose. For reference’s sake, the average monthly loan payment for people with a bachelor’s degree is $302, while those with a master’s pay $688. Most federal student loans have a six-month grace period after graduation and before you must start making payments. Direct Subsidized, Direct Unsubsidized, and Federal Family Education Loans fall under this category. Perkins Loans have a nine-month grace period, so they can benefit even more from this financial plan. Note that interest accrues during your grace period. Get better rates with a high-yield savings account. Once you start earning an income, you’ll need to work fast. Open up a high- yield savings account immediately. These accounts have a much higher interest than their traditional counterparts — up to 12 times higher. Not all banks offer them, and not all have the same annual percentage yield (APY). Currently, SoFi has a sky-high APY of 4.6%, while Wells Fargo’s highest interest accounts only reach 2.51%. Carefully research the bank you’re using and read the fine print. High-yield accounts have a few drawbacks. Generally, you can’t make more than a few withdrawals a month. Few banks offer ATM cards for these accounts. They’re perfect for carving off student loan debt but not for daily finances. Once you’ve set up the account, it’s time to start saving. Deposit any extra cash from your loan payment into your high-yield account. When the grace period ends, you’ll have a savings account to keep up with your loan and its interest. Student loan debt is a huge hurdle for every college graduate, but you can pay your loans off with a little savvy planning. Keep the goal in mind whenever you make that monthly deposit. Soon, you’ll no longer count yourself among the millions of indebted Americans.

FLAG DAY AND FAMILY ANNIVERSARIES REMEMBERING MY FATHER AND CELEBRATING FAMILY HISTORY

June 14 is a day marked by deep personal significance for me as an attorney and a son. It is a date not usually celebrated that I have come to honor every year as it commemorates three milestones: Flag Day, my father’s birthday, and my parents’ wedding anniversary. My father, the co-founder of our law firm and a tremendous influence in my life and career, was born on June 14. He passed away several years ago, but his memory and the values he instilled in me continue to shape my life and work. His commitment to justice and community service forged the ethos of our firm and set a standard of integrity and diligence that we strive to uphold to this day. Flag Day symbolizes a broader sense of patriotism and pride in our country, a sentiment deeply cherished by my father. He had a profound love for this nation and believed in
