FAMILY PEARLS
FAMILY, THE HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE Family = Those closest to the patient in knowledge, care and affection. May include the biological family, the family of acquisition (related by marriage/contract) or the family of choice and friends (including pets).
As patients most often live with family, the family experiences and is affected by the patient’s illness 24/7/365. They: • Live with the decisions taken • Experience the effects of treatments • Provide care (some caregivers lose their careers/future) • Often pay for the patient’s care (some families become bankrupt) • Remember the decisions taken and the patient’s experience for the rest of their lives • Everyone is watching his own future (as each person will experience one or more illnesses and ultimately die)
