N ame the Emotion : Reflect what you see. “ You look upset… ” U nderstand : “ Tell me what you are thinking, feeling, etc… ” Paraphrase what you hear. “ I can only imagine… ” R espect : “ I am so impressed by… ” S upport : “ I wish things were different ” “ I will be with you throughout this ” “ I want to give you the best possible care ” E xplore : “ Tell me more… ” Avoid “ I’m sorry ”, false hope.
