F ear ’ s I llusion UNMASK THE MENTAL BARRIERS HOLDING US BACK

OCTOBER 2023

mom told me stories of people breaking their necks while doing gymnastics or diving into a swimming pool. I was scared to get in the ocean because of sharks. I know my mom shared her fears with me out of love. She wanted to protect my sister and me from these potentially harmful things. However, these fears are so deeply rooted in me that I struggle with them to this day. I understand the risk of harm in reality is much less than the risk of harm in my mind. Honestly, I believe it’s too late to fix my concerns (I’m ruined in that regard), but I can stop the anxiety from affecting my children. I encourage my children to participate in all kinds of activities that scare me so they don’t develop the same fears. I’m interested to see how nature versus nurture plays a role in their relationship with fear. From a young age, I’ve taken my kids places where they could interact with animals. I was terrified, but I knew how important it was for my children’s development, so my husband and nanny came along as the front line so to speak. I know I was sweating bullets the whole time, but I worked up a smile to prove to my kids it was okay to be around animals (except the one time a goat jumped on me — I think my scream could be heard for miles and miles). We enrolled them in ski lessons, which has helped them develop a love of skiing. They can fly down the slopes without fear. I want to break this cycle of dread for my kids so it doesn’t negatively impact their lives. Fear is also present in many of our clients’ lives, especially when starting the divorce process. They often have anxiety surrounding the change, the unknown, how their lives will look in the future, how the divorce process will impact their children, and how they’ll support themselves going forward. These are genuine and valid fears, and we won’t let you face them alone. We’ll stay by your side, holding your hand and guiding you through the process. We’ll help you understand from a practical standpoint that everything will be okay and provide you with an idea of what your future life will look like. In my opinion, the only way to overcome fear is to understand that it’s greater in your mind than in reality and to engage in things that scare you as much as you can. Trying to force yourself into situations that make you feel uncomfortable or miserable probably won’t release any fear. It might even amplify it. But remembering that fear is mostly something we create within ourselves will make it easier to work through.

Fear plays a significant role in our lives, whether or not we’re fully aware of it. It can stop us from participating in new experiences, prevent us from building deeper and more meaningful relationships, and keep us contained in our comfort zones. Fear is debilitating and can be challenging to overcome, but by understanding the root of your worries, you can work through them and enjoy more of what life has to offer. You might not be able to tell by looking at or talking with me, but I am afraid of anything that could cause me physical harm. I realize everyone fears physical harm on some level, but mine is beyond a reasonable person’s fears. I know this and yet still have those fears. My mom instilled this dread in me from an early age. Since she was a doctor, she always told me what could happen in various situations. I grew up afraid of animals because my mom taught me about the injuries and diseases people can get from animals. This unease grew so extreme that I feared visiting a friend’s house because they might have a pet. I had to ask my friends to put their pets away so I could function normally at their houses. It was embarrassing. I became afraid of physical activity after my

Gut health goes beyond your stomach — in fact, it plays a vital role in your overall well-being! Research shows that about 39 trillion bacteria live in your large intestine. Collectively, all of these bacteria make up your gut microbiome, which helps keep you healthy. A balanced gut also promotes proper digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, and mental health. 5 F oods for a H ealthy D igestive S ystem

BERRIES Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries are not only high in fiber but also rich in antioxidants that help reduce inflammation all over the body. The fiber-antioxidant combination works wonders for gut health! SAUERKRAUT Some people love sauerkraut, and others aren’t very fond of the fermented cabbage dish. However, those who can get past the acquired taste will find that sauerkraut is abundant in probiotics, as the fermentation process encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria to aid digestion. TEMPEH Tempeh is a plant-based protein made from an Indonesian fermented soybean product. Because tempeh is fermented, it is a probiotic, but because it is made from soybeans, it is also a prebiotic, making it a powerhouse for creating beneficial gut bacteria. Incorporating these gut-friendly suggestions into your daily diet is a rewarding and delicious way to improve your gut health and, in turn, the health of your entire body. Remember, it all starts in the belly!

For a healthy gut and body, start incorporating these five food types into your daily diet.

YOGURT Yogurt is an amazing source of probiotics, beneficial bacteria that support and balance your gut flora to prevent harmful bacteria from taking over. As a general tip, look for yogurt labeled “live cultures” for a tasty treat full of probiotics! WHOLE GRAINS Because whole grains, such as brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat, are high in fiber, they promote optimal digestion and, in turn, a thriving gut. Fibrous foods also act as prebiotics, which facilitate the growth of beneficial bacteria.

In college, she studied history and secondary education, but Jennifer wasn’t sure if that was the direction she wanted to go for the rest of her life. She settled down and started a family. After several years, Jennifer started to contemplate her career path and began looking for something that would bring more fulfillment to her life. At this time, Jennifer and her family moved to Georgia, and she decided to pursue a career in the legal field. She earned her paralegal certification and promptly started working at a local family law firm. Six years later, Jennifer was looking for something new, which led her to Vayman and Teitelbaum! Jennifer has been a guiding light for our clients since joining our team. She listens intently to our clients’ needs and wants and does what she can to set them up for future success. Jennifer truly cares about our clients and their outcomes. She knows every case and situation is unique and treats it as such. When you work with Jennifer, know that you’re in good hands. Since moving to Georgia, Jennifer has continued to stay busy with her family. She loves spending time with her three cats and rooting for her son at all his sporting events. When she gets some downtime, you can usually find her reading a new suspense novel.

There’s a common misconception regarding individuals who work in the legal field. Some believe people only get involved in law to make money and take advantage of those in difficult positions. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Sure, there may be some outliers, but the vast majority of lawyers, paralegals, and other legal professionals started working in the industry to help others, especially those going through hard times. In February, we brought Jennifer onto our team as our new senior paralegal, and she has continued to impress us with her ability to help our clients with their legal needs.

We are so glad to have Jennifer on our team. We know she’ll continue to amaze our clients for years to come!

FUGITIVE’S JOB HUNT BACKFIRES: ARRESTED DURING INTERVIEW!

T he F ugitive W ho A pplied for a P olice J ob FROM APPLICANT TO ARRESTED:

Even most criminals need traditional employment to pay the bills, but Zyeama Johnson looked for work in all the wrong places. Perhaps Johnson imagined her previous experience with law enforcement would give her a leg up in her application to the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office in New Jersey in 2022. But unfortunately for her, all of Johnson’s past and future involvement with the police would be on the wrong side of the law.

station would perform a background check before hiring — or that this office specializes in resolving outstanding warrants. When processing her application, the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office discovered the active bench warrant in Pennsylvania. The routine investigation also found 10 additional active bench warrants in Jersey City, New Jersey; Johnson had allegedly failed to appear on traffic charges.

interview question, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” a new meaning.

After taking Johnson into custody, the police proceeded to search her property. Incredibly, they found two credit cards in her possession they believed were stolen. Police added credit card theft charges to Johnson’s already considerable rap sheet. To make matters worse for her, the sheriff’s office also contacted Johnson’s former employer, the United States Postal Service, which launched its own investigation into her conduct. As of October 2022, Johnson was being held in a Hudson County jail awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania for the most serious charge against her. It’s unclear why she thought applying for a law enforcement position with outstanding warrants was a wise career move, but at least she made her would-be coworkers’ jobs easy that day.

Johnson was looking for a legal way to earn a living when she applied

Most employers in this situation would probably move on to the next applicant, but the sheriff’s department decided to call Johnson in for an “interview” instead. Unsurprisingly, they had no intention of hiring

for a job as a security guard at the sheriff’s office. But her past money-making ventures allegedly involved fraud, and she had failed to appear in a Pennsylvania

court on the charges. Presumably, Johnson did not realize a police

her and arrested the fugitive on the spot. It gave the standard
