A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

KEY SCHOOL DATES

On Wednesday evening the Music Department organised our first concert of the year involving students from Years 7-13. As ever I was blown away by the talent of our students who took part, who performed a wide range of pieces from different musical genres including piano concertos, jazz percussion and pop classics. It was also an opportunity for our GCSE and A Level

students to perform their own compositions. Last night we welcomed hundreds of visitors into school for our Sixth Form open evening. Subject areas were buzzing and it was lovely to see our current Sixth Form students and teachers so eager to share their excitement for their subjects. Students have also taken part in a number of trips this week with Media students visiting the EGX Conference at the Excel Centre, learning all about the multi-million gaming industry and Fashion students visiting the Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey. We also took a group of Year 12 students to the LinkedIn UK Head Office in Farringdon. Year 7 have marked the end of their first half term with their first charity focus. Students have outdone themselves with their fabulous pink outfits to raise money and awareness for breast cancer charities. Click here if you wish to make a donation. I would like to wish all the school community a wonderful half term break. I know that our Year 11 students will be busy revising for their mock exams which begin on Monday 30 October, but it is important that they also make time to rest and recharge. I look forward to welcoming students in Years 7 to 13 back to school on Wednesday 1 November.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

As the half term holiday approaches, most of our students will be looking forward to an opportunity to relax. For our Year 11 and 13 students, however, mock exams are approaching and half term will be an opportunity to revise. In addition to this, the clocks will be going back and many of us may find that affecting our wellbeing. To coincide with this time of year, our partners at Kooth, the free, safe and anonymous online wellbeing service for children and young people, have shared a series of webinars for students and their parents. They include webinars for a range of specific groups. Please do have a look at the categories which can be accessed through the links below. Kooth Introduction. How to be a good ally to your LGBTQ+ child. Kooth for Neurodiverse and SEND Users. How Kooth & Qwell Can Support Eating Disorders and Self Injury & Harm. Male Mental Health and Healthy Relationships. A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13

I would like to start by wishing good luck to all our UCAS early applicants. Monday’s deadline has now been successfully met. Further information regarding the outcome of their applications and the next steps will be communicated to them in the coming weeks directly from the Universities. Students need to ensure that they are frequently checking their emails, as this is how the Universities will be contacting them. They should also be logging on to UCAS where they can track the progress of their application. On Wednesday, as part of the enrichment session, our A Level Science students were invited to attend a talk, which was led by Dr Tony Fox, who is the Chair of the London Hospital Ethics Committee. It was an extremely interesting talk and was very well-attended. Yesterday, as part of our Sixth Form open evening, we welcomed to the school the prospective Year 12 students alongside their parents and carers. A large number of Year 13 students were involved as part of this event. I would really like to thank them for their assistance and support during that event. They were all incredible and their enthusiasm is very much appreciated. The first week after half term will be a shorter week, with students returning to school on Wednesday. Nevertheless, it will be a busy week with a trip taking place on Friday 3 November where our A Level Music students will pay a visit to the BBC Symphony Orchestra at The Barbican. Over the course of the next half term, I am expecting to send the bulk of the remaining UCAS applications, so Year 13 students need to continue to work on them and submit them to us in the coming weeks. On a final note, I would like to wish all Year 13 students a restful half term break. They all need to ensure that they split their time off between getting some needed rest, as well as to revise for their mock exams, which are due to start on Monday 13 November.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Significant Black Figure of the Week

Meet Nicola Adams:

Trailblazer Nicola made history as the first woman to win the Olympic gold medal for boxing. She was also the first openly LGBT boxer to win a medal. Up until 2012, the Olympics didn’t allow women to compete in boxing, so Nicola was fighting stereotypes to earn her place in the ring. She went on to win the gold in London 2012 and Rio in 2016. Always a trailblazer, Nicola didn’t stop making history when she stopped boxing. She took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, breaking boundaries as the first same-sex couple to dance on the show. Biographical documentary ‘Lioness: The Nicola Adams Story’ examines Nicola’s life spent fighting fierce competitors, prejudice and adversity and her determination to never give up.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

The kite runner is a novel about two young boys growing up in Afghanistan during the 70s and 80s, one excessively wealthy and desperate to please his father, the other, the son of his father’s servant with a religious standing that leads to him being further oppressed form an unlikely friendship that is torn apart after a life changing incident. Their personal lives then take them in very different directions due to the political turmoil of the country but the impact their friendship left on eachother lasts a life- time. It explores how complex relationships are and how peoples connections and their life experiences shape who they are. Personally, I loved following how the characters changed and developed throughout the book and how even through war, abuse and prejudice, love prevailed. ~ Recommended by Marina M-B in Year 11
