A History of Sex and Gender
We hear a lot about ‘gender ideology’ in today’s culture wars, but gender roles have
always been the product of political ideologies across time and place. HIH3377, A
History of Sex and Gender takes a broad historical view of how and why
understandings of gender have changed from the Middle Ages to the present. This
module looks at the history of sex and gender from a social and cultural perspective,
drawing out connections with class and race. It explores how ideas of masculinity
and femininity have changed over time, how gender has impacted on social,
economic, and political life, and how dominant ideologies of gender relate to the
experience of m en’s and women’s daily lives. The module also analyses changing
attitudes towards sexuality and demonstrates how modern sexual identities are the
product of historical processes rather than fixed and unchanging.
