The Past in the Present: Exploring Heritage Practices and
Debates
The Past in the Present: Exploring Heritage Practice and Debates is a second-year
undergraduate module that offers an introduction to the heritage industry and current
debates in heritage studies. The module combines analysis of a range of heritage
sites and themes through lectures, workshops, seminar discussions and fieldtrips. It
looks at the lively role that heritage plays in contemporary society and politics and
considers both tangible heritage, like physical buildings and landscapes, and
intangible heritage, like language and culture. It is suited to those students who are
interested in thinking critically about the ways in which the past is used in the
present, whether contested or celebrated and for those considering a career in the
heritage sector or further study at postgraduate level, such as our MA in Public
History and Heritage.
