On Wednesday evening the Music Department organised our first concert of the year involving students from Years 7-13. As ever I was blown away by the talent of our students who took part, who performed a wide range of pieces from different musical genres including piano concertos, jazz percussion and pop classics. It was also an opportunity for our GCSE and A Level

students to perform their own compositions. Last night we welcomed hundreds of visitors into school for our Sixth Form open evening. Subject areas were buzzing and it was lovely to see our current Sixth Form students and teachers so eager to share their excitement for their subjects. Students have also taken part in a number of trips this week with Media students visiting the EGX Conference at the Excel Centre, learning all about the multi-million gaming industry and Fashion students visiting the Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey. We also took a group of Year 12 students to the LinkedIn UK Head Office in Farringdon. Year 7 have marked the end of their first half term with their first charity focus. Students have outdone themselves with their fabulous pink outfits to raise money and awareness for breast cancer charities. Click here if you wish to make a donation. I would like to wish all the school community a wonderful half term break. I know that our Year 11 students will be busy revising for their mock exams which begin on Monday 30 October, but it is important that they also make time to rest and recharge. I look forward to welcoming students in Years 7 to 13 back to school on Wednesday 1 November.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
As the half term holiday approaches, most of our students will be looking forward to an opportunity to relax. For our Year 11 and 13 students, however, mock exams are approaching and half term will be an opportunity to revise. In addition to this, the clocks will be going back and many of us may find that affecting our wellbeing. To coincide with this time of year, our partners at Kooth, the free, safe and anonymous online wellbeing service for children and young people, have shared a series of webinars for students and their parents. A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8
We have had a fantastic final week of the first half term and Year 8 continue to impress both myself and their teachers. Well done to all our Year 7/8 Football players this half term who have played 3 games so far and only been defeated once! We are looking forward to seeing the team develop as the year progresses. Well done also to our Year 8/9 Rugby squad for their amazing efforts in their first match of the season against Christs. It was a tough game but all our players remained determined and showed amazing teamwork and sportsmanship. Their hard work paid off as they went on to take the win, beating Christ’s by 4 points, with a final score of 12-8. I know there have been lots of students involved in the production of Annie. This will be such an amazing school event and I wanted to praise students who have been regularly attending rehearsals - we are all very much looking forward to watching the final production! This half term 8EMU have taken the top spot on the epraise leaderboard, following closely behind is 8EFR and then 8SGZ. Congratulations to those forms and all students who have achieved epraise points this half term. When we return to school on Wednesday 1 November, we encourage you to remind your children about the key expectations around uniform, lanyards and chrome books. It is essential that Year 8 students are putting their best foot forward and continuing in the same positive way that they have started the school year.

Significant Black Figure of the Week
Meet Nicola Adams:
Trailblazer Nicola made history as the first woman to win the Olympic gold medal for boxing. She was also the first openly LGBT boxer to win a medal. Up until 2012, the Olympics didn’t allow women to compete in boxing, so Nicola was fighting stereotypes to earn her place in the ring. She went on to win the gold in London 2012 and Rio in 2016. Always a trailblazer, Nicola didn’t stop making history when she stopped boxing. She took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, breaking boundaries as the first same-sex couple to dance on the show. Biographical documentary ‘Lioness: The Nicola Adams Story’ examines Nicola’s life spent fighting fierce competitors, prejudice and adversity and her determination to never give up.
BOOK OF THE MONTH
The weight of water is written in a poetic form of sparse verse and so it is a very quick and easy read but one that is absolutely teeming with heartache and beauty. It follows a young Polish girl as she and her mother migrate to the UK in search of her father, she struggles with her school and home life and feels out of place and lonely. I loved how engrossing and impactful such few words could be and how the audience can see all the protagonists insecurities yet also how incredibly strong, intuitive and resilient she is through all the hardship she endures. It’s a touching coming of age story which explores feelings of alienation, first loves and perseverance. ~ Recommended by Marina M-B in Year 11
