Stop Ignoring Your Back Pain

Understanding Back Pain Back pain may be common, but it is absolutely not normal. There many conditions that can cause your back to begin to hurt, and it is smart to have your back looked at by a physical therapist or qualified healthcare professional early on so that you know exactly what is going on with your body from the get-go. Once the cause of your back pain is determined, your therapist will be able to identify the best treatment options for your body’s needs. This will likely include the following: • Hands on or manual techniques, postural corrective exercises and pain relief treatments. • Targeted exercises that are specialized to the region of the back that is experiencing the most pain. These exercises are designed to help build strength and support the surrounding muscles.

• Site specific stretching designed to improve range of motion and flexibility. This will take into account the health of your spinal vertebrae and any potential stretches that may support optimal back health. • Support and guidance with a regular exercise routine and habit formation for proper posture and safe movement strategies, as well as strength- building activities. Attempting to undertake any of these changes on your own after you’ve experienced a back injury can be a challenge and is not advised. Working with a licensed and experienced therapist can provide you with the guidance and ongoing support that you need to ensure that you do not experience any further injury as you attempt to heal the cause of your back pain. A comprehensive treatment program will include a diagnosis, instructions on self management, education on proper posture safe body mechanics and movement strategies.

Getting to the Bottom of Back Pain

There are a lot of different reasons as to why you may be experiencing back pain, and ignoring any of them is not a good idea. Some of the most common issues that cause back pain to linger include: • Muscle sprain or strain • Slipped vertebrae or bulging disk • Injury to the supporting muscles or tendons • Arthritis These concerns can develop as a result of a myriad of external issues, such as having poor posture, prolonged sedentary activity, a fall, car crash, sports injury, stress, heavy lifting, and so on. Humans struggle with back pain because we live our lives upright and our spine is subject to a multitude of stressors. Our daily routine draws our body and spine forward with sitting, bending, reaching etc. If we don’t balance those forward bending movements and prolonged sitting posture it

eventually takes a toll on our body in the form of repetitive stress and postural adaptations. Additionally, time and gravity tends to “not be our friend” after a certain age, contributing to postural changes, spinal compression as seen by losing height as we age and normal ‘wear and tear.” With increased awareness of proper posture, safe movement strategies and regular exercise we can avoid and combat the effects of our upright lifestyle, prevent back pain and live a pain free life. When it comes to back pain, Don’t Wait! When you experience an injury to your back or realize that you are experiencing regular pain as a result of an ongoing injury or overuse syndrome, it is important to find out the cause of your back pain as quickly as possible. Back pain can quickly become chronic, as a potentially small issue can become complicated when it is not addressed early on. Working with a qualified therapist can help you to identify the source of your pain.

Eating Habits & How It Affects Your Joints

inflammation. Foods with gluten, trans fats, found in snack foods like chips and pastries, and high sugar, that handful of M&M’s from your coworker’s desk, all cause inflammation. For many people, dairy products are also inflammatory. Eating these types of foods over a long period of time means more and more inflammation throughout the body and ultimately more pain. While changing your food sounds simple, many need more guidance and support, which is why a nutrition consultation, is often helpful. However, you can take our tips above and start alleviating your pain today!

Relieving arthritis or joint pain may be easier than you think! The solution may be as simple as paying attention to what you are eating in order to avoid inflammatory foods that often lead to pain. What Inflammatory Foods Lead to Pain? Eating highly processed foods (such as pasta, bread and crackers—especially those containing gluten) creates inflammation in the body. This inflammation then leads to the actual physical pain that you may feel in your knees and joints since the joints are particularly vulnerable to
