2024 Orchestra Ensembles Brochure

POLICIES Musicians and parents will receive a handbook detailing all policies and will be required to read and sign a document stating they have read and understand all policies. The CMS Director has ultimate authority regarding auditions, seating, financial aid, scholarships, evaluations, and awards. Financial Aid Thanks to the generosity of our funders the Community Music School can offer financial assistance and scholarships to students based on financial need. In addition, CMS offers discounts for endangered-instrument study and for current CMS students already enrolled in individual lessons. Audition Process Step 1: Sign up for an audition April 1 – June 30. You may sign up for more than one audition. Step 2: Prepare for the audition. Audition requirements for each orchestra/ensemble level are available on the auditions page of the website at webster.edu/ cms-auditions . Audition excerpts required for each orchestra/ensemble will be posted to the website in early July. Step 3: In early August, look for an email from the CMS which will contain your audition date(s) and time slot. Step 4: Attend your audition. All auditions will be held at the CMS Center at 535 Garden Avenue in Webster Groves . Step 5: Audition results are sent out in early September.

The Community Music School of Webster University offers multiple opportunities for musicians from around the St. Louis area to play together in an inclusive environment where they feel valued for their contributions as musicians and creative individuals. Our sequential orchestra program ushers young musicians through multiple levels, enhancing students’ skills beyond individual performance, and supporting the education process in school music programs. Additional ensembles and other special group programs give students opportunities to advance their skills collaboratively in smaller groups. Why Join a CMS Ensemble? • Students receive high-quality musical instruction from top conductors. • Students learn and perform challenging and diverse musical literature. • Students receive sectional coaching from experienced professional musicians. • Students meet and socialize with peers from all over the St. Louis area in a team-building setting. Musician Expectations APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS Membership in the CMS orchestra and ensembles program is by audition for both new and returning students. Applicants must participate in their school orchestra/band program on the same instrument on which they audition for CMS programs. This policy is waved only when no orchestra or band program exists. COMMITMENT Acceptance into a CMS ensemble requires a full academic- year commitment for all events from September through May. Musicians are expected to arrive early for tuning, attend weekly rehearsals and scheduled sectionals, practice music outside of the weekly rehearsals, attend dress rehearsals, and attend all performances. Principal players have additional responsibilities. Seating may rotate throughout the year.
