A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

KEY SCHOOL DATES

On Wednesday evening the Music Department organised our first concert of the year involving students from Years 7-13. As ever I was blown away by the talent of our students who took part, who performed a wide range of pieces from different musical genres including piano concertos, jazz percussion and pop classics. It was also an opportunity for our GCSE and A Level

students to perform their own compositions. Last night we welcomed hundreds of visitors into school for our Sixth Form open evening. Subject areas were buzzing and it was lovely to see our current Sixth Form students and teachers so eager to share their excitement for their subjects. Students have also taken part in a number of trips this week with Media students visiting the EGX Conference at the Excel Centre, learning all about the multi-million gaming industry and Fashion students visiting the Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey. We also took a group of Year 12 students to the LinkedIn UK Head Office in Farringdon. Year 7 have marked the end of their first half term with their first charity focus. Students have outdone themselves with their fabulous pink outfits to raise money and awareness for breast cancer charities. Click here if you wish to make a donation. I would like to wish all the school community a wonderful half term break. I know that our Year 11 students will be busy revising for their mock exams which begin on Monday 30 October, but it is important that they also make time to rest and recharge. I look forward to welcoming students in Years 7 to 13 back to school on Wednesday 1 November.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

As the half term holiday approaches, most of our students will be looking forward to an opportunity to relax. For our Year 11 and 13 students, however, mock exams are approaching and half term will be an opportunity to revise. In addition to this, the clocks will be going back and many of us may find that affecting our wellbeing. To coincide with this time of year, our partners at Kooth, the free, safe and anonymous online wellbeing service for children and young people, have shared a series of webinars for students and their parents. They include webinars for a range of specific groups. Please do have a look at the categories which can be accessed through the links below. Kooth Introduction. How to be a good ally to your LGBTQ+ child. Kooth for Neurodiverse and SEND Users. How Kooth & Qwell Can Support Eating Disorders and Self Injury & Harm. Male Mental Health and Healthy Relationships. A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

Well done to all of our Year 12 students for completing the first half term of sixth form. It has been an extremely busy half term and I have been so impressed with how well they have all settled in and it has been lovely to hear about all their achievements and compliments from their subject teachers. We hope they all have a restful break. On Wednesday we were delighted to welcome Professor Fox to speak to our A Level Science students. Professor Fox is the Chairman of the London Research Ethics Committee for the NHS, which means he is the Chair for the whole of England. Professor Fox discussed ethical issues with the students and worked through scenarios with them. All students who attended said the talk was engaging and would be extremely helpful for them when they apply to medical courses next year. Also on Wednesday, twenty of our Year 12 students went on a trip to LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional networking platform. During this experience they were given insights into the corporate world and the chance to explore the inner workings of this renowned tech company, as well as learning plenty of tips for building their own LinkedIn profile. Yesterday we held our Sixth Form open evening event for the prospective Year 12 students. I would like to say a big thank you to the large number of Year 12 students who supported this event. They were all incredible and their assistance and enthusiasm is much appreciated. Looking into the next half term, the Year 12 PCM is set to take place on Wednesday 8 November. All information regarding booking appointments will be sent out in the first week back. I wish everybody a restful half term break and look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday 1 November.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Significant Black Figure of the Week

Meet Nicola Adams:

Trailblazer Nicola made history as the first woman to win the Olympic gold medal for boxing. She was also the first openly LGBT boxer to win a medal. Up until 2012, the Olympics didn’t allow women to compete in boxing, so Nicola was fighting stereotypes to earn her place in the ring. She went on to win the gold in London 2012 and Rio in 2016. Always a trailblazer, Nicola didn’t stop making history when she stopped boxing. She took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, breaking boundaries as the first same-sex couple to dance on the show. Biographical documentary ‘Lioness: The Nicola Adams Story’ examines Nicola’s life spent fighting fierce competitors, prejudice and adversity and her determination to never give up.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

The kite runner is a novel about two young boys growing up in Afghanistan during the 70s and 80s, one excessively wealthy and desperate to please his father, the other, the son of his father’s servant with a religious standing that leads to him being further oppressed form an unlikely friendship that is torn apart after a life changing incident. Their personal lives then take them in very different directions due to the political turmoil of the country but the impact their friendship left on eachother lasts a life- time. It explores how complex relationships are and how peoples connections and their life experiences shape who they are. Personally, I loved following how the characters changed and developed throughout the book and how even through war, abuse and prejudice, love prevailed. ~ Recommended by Marina M-B in Year 11
