now and there is nobody but the traf fic cop. One thing is absolute: eternal jus tice may not be bowed out of the uni verse. There are verities that are granitic, like the ages. There are laws that are written in stone, like those of Moses; and some are written in blood, like those of Draco. They have not been repealed. There never was a time when busi ness demanded a lawyer as much as it does today. And it is possible that in private and social life an advocate of the moral law may be as essential. Maybe if “ obey” were not only kept in the marriage ceremony, but doubled to include the man, and then exacted of the children and required of the youth as he assumes citizenship, life would not be so cheap nor honor so salable.— Los Angeles Times.
hearts are hardened in one way and another. We have sufficient knowl edge of language, Qerman, Norwegian, Swedish, Spanish, Italian, French, Dutch, Slavonian, and Portuguese, so that we can point to verses and have them read In their own language pas sages necessary to salvation, and re joice that some are reached in this way. The lumber boats are hard, the older men often being Christians, but ha$e choked the Word of God and are unfruitful. However, wd And mpss men always changing jobs (like dish washers in city restaurants), as the work is not an attraction to a young man desirous of advancement. On one ship we dealt with a lad who seemed to be a Christian, but who had let something come into his life which undoubtedly displeased the Lord, for after listening a few minutes left where he could be alone. Another youth near heard and became inter ested and soon came out fine for the Lord, giving his testimony later to a Catholic friend who would not listen to anything apart from church teach ing. Many also have been brought up religiously, but ignorant of the truth, not knowing that Jesus said, "I am the way, the -truth, and the Life: no man cometh to the Father but by me. Beloved reader, pray for these you have read about, for Mr. Dunham, who assists us one day a week, and others who help us occasionally. Five men could be kept busy continually among cargo steamers, passenger boats, oil tankers, and fishing craft, to say nothing about our own and foreign naval enlisted men. Jife. M. “ The obey is about gone out of the marriage ceremony," chirps the pen- point man. He might have added, it is about gone oiit of the law also. And it seems to be about gone out of the home. A m it is about gone out of religion. If it continues it may have to go out of the dictionary. When mother will not obey father, when father will not listen to mother, when the rising generation will not obey either of them nor the teacher and receives the backing of both of them in his deviltry, and when nobody obeyB the traffic laws nor any other laws when it is inconvenient, what is the answer? The devil has been bowed out of religion and hell has received the fade away in the picture and eternal Jus tice has been reduced to a few flabby advices and the word “ obey" is smoth- ered in rose water and rhetoric. The good old-fashioned “ obey” had teeth in it. And there is a bare possi bility that it yet has teeth, in spite of the fact that we dream they have been drawn. The devil never was much to be proud o f; but he served the ancient and honorable purpose of keeping folks in the straight and narrow path. The path has expanded into a highway m m OBEY!
