— strong man) that trusteth in man (Adam)”— “ Blessed is the man (GeV- er) that trusteth in Jehovah” (Jer. 17:6-7). When God reveals Himself to man, man 1 b made conscious of the distinc tiveness and difference between him self and God. Jehovah in His holiness made Isaiah conscious of his sinful ness. The beauty of the Beloved caused the bride to exclaim, "I am black.” The Glory of the Christ made the prophet Daniel to confess, "My comeliness is turned into corruption.” The power of Christ drew out from Peter, as he beheld the miraculous draught of fishes, the confession, “ I am a sinful man, O Lord.” A Type o f Christ Indicative, or the forecast of the man to be. Again and again, when any appearance of the Divine was seen, Christ was said to be “ The Son of Man,” and to “ have the appearance of a man” (Adam) (Ezek. 1:5, 8, 10, 26, 28; Daniel 10:16). What Ezekiel and Daniel saw in vision, John the apostle saw in reality. Not once "like a son of man," but “ the Word made flesh.” There are two remarkable passages of Scripture, where Christ is specially and specifically indicated. In 2 Sam. 7:18, 19, we have God’s promise to David about his seed occupying the throne forever, and David’s expression of gratitude for the promise. That David apprehended a greater than Solomon was intended is evident from the passage in 1 Chron. 17:17, where we read, “ Thou hast also spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast regard ed one according to the estate of a man (Adam) of high degree.!*' Luther’s translation is, “ Thou hast looked upon one after the order (or form) pf a man, Who is the Lord God on High.” As Abraham rejoiced to see the day of Jesus, so David re ceived with thankfulness the Divine assurance that from his family Bhould come the Promised Deliverer, who would reign ovpr his house forever (Luke 1:31-33). Relative, Adam is used to represent the believer’s attitude towards God. There is an expressive sentence which embodies the right attitude of man to wards God, and that is, “ Blessed, or happy, is the man” (Adam). The blessed man is the one who “ Trusteth in Jehovah” (Psa. 84:12), who is for given by Him (Psa. 32: 3); whose

earth, and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Gen. 6:5). (4) All men, like Adam, have been unfaithful: “ They, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant, have dealt treacherously with me” (Hosea 6:7 R.V.), and "like Adam” (R.V.) or “ after the manner of men” (margin) seek to "cover up their transgressions” (Job 31:33). (5 ) All men are born with a wilful tendency to be independent of God: “ Man is born as a wild ass’s colt” (Job 11:12). The sourness of the crab apple proves the apple is sour; and the stubbornness of the colt proves the assificatlon of the assiflded- ness of the ass. (6) All men in their best estate are only an empty show. “ Every man (Adam) at his best estate is altogeth er vanity” or wind (Psa. 39:5). (7) The lot of all men naturally is unsatisfactory and disappointing: “ Man (Adam) that is born of a wo man is of a few days and full of trouble” (Job 14:1). How minutely correct is the sum mary of man, for the facts of the case prove the correctness of the Divine Revelation. Man Subject To Influences Contrastive, or man contrasted with God. Man, like a weather-vane, is in fluenced by every changing wind of circumstance. God is like a granite rock in the ocean, unmoved by the rag ing waves which beat against it. “ The Strength of Israel will not lie or re pent, for He is not man (Adam)” (1 Sam. 15:29). Man looks at things through the eyes of personal prefer ence, and is influenced by the glamour of appearances; •but God looks be neath the surface, and gauges what a man is by his inner being. "God seeth not as man (Adam )seeth, for man (Adam) looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart” (1 Sam. 16:7). Man is blackened and blemished by sin, but Christ is beautiful and bright with holiness; hence, God says of Him, “ Thou art fairer than the children of men (Adam)” (Psa. 45:2). Poor frail Adamic nature cannot help man in the greatest of his strength, and man in the strength of his greatness needs to rest in a power outside of himself, if he would be blessed: “ cursed be the man (Gever
