On Wednesday evening the Music Department organised our first concert of the year involving students from Years 7-13. As ever I was blown away by the talent of our students who took part, who performed a wide range of pieces from different musical genres including piano concertos, jazz percussion and pop classics. It was also an opportunity for our GCSE and A Level

students to perform their own compositions. Last night we welcomed hundreds of visitors into school for our Sixth Form open evening. Subject areas were buzzing and it was lovely to see our current Sixth Form students and teachers so eager to share their excitement for their subjects. Students have also taken part in a number of trips this week with Media students visiting the EGX Conference at the Excel Centre, learning all about the multi-million gaming industry and Fashion students visiting the Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey. We also took a group of Year 12 students to the LinkedIn UK Head Office in Farringdon. Year 7 have marked the end of their first half term with their first charity focus. Students have outdone themselves with their fabulous pink outfits to raise money and awareness for breast cancer charities. Click here if you wish to make a donation. I would like to wish all the school community a wonderful half term break. I know that our Year 11 students will be busy revising for their mock exams which begin on Monday 30 October, but it is important that they also make time to rest and recharge. I look forward to welcoming students in Years 7 to 13 back to school on Wednesday 1 November.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
As the half term holiday approaches, most of our students will be looking forward to an opportunity to relax. For our Year 11 and 13 students, however, mock exams are approaching and half term will be an opportunity to revise. In addition to this, the clocks will be going back and many of us may find that affecting our wellbeing. To coincide with this time of year, our partners at Kooth, the free, safe and anonymous online wellbeing service for children and young people, have shared a series of webinars for students and their parents. A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10
Students have continued working hard in this final week of the first half term. Following their recent Drop Down Day, we have taken in feedback from all students’ experiences which will help us with planning future Drop Down Days. There have been great reports from English teachers about the wonderful variety of the speeches performed during this day. Many students had to overcome great fears in order to speak in front of their peers, a skill that will become hugely important as they go through their lives. All students should be exceptionally proud of themselves. This week we have launched the black history month poetry competition which will be held in Waldegrave and then the winners will go on to national competition. Our top epraise winners this week are Kareena T in 10FHE, Lacey M in 10PRE and Matilda V in 10SDR. The tutor group that has achieved the most points this half term is 10SHO who have collected an impressive total of 363 points as a form! I am sure everyone is looking forward to a week and two days extra rest. Students return to school on Wednesday 1 November. I look forward to seeing all the bright faces back, ready and raring to go for our final stint of 2023.

Significant Black Figure of the Week
Meet Nicola Adams:
Trailblazer Nicola made history as the first woman to win the Olympic gold medal for boxing. She was also the first openly LGBT boxer to win a medal. Up until 2012, the Olympics didn’t allow women to compete in boxing, so Nicola was fighting stereotypes to earn her place in the ring. She went on to win the gold in London 2012 and Rio in 2016. Always a trailblazer, Nicola didn’t stop making history when she stopped boxing. She took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, breaking boundaries as the first same-sex couple to dance on the show. Biographical documentary ‘Lioness: The Nicola Adams Story’ examines Nicola’s life spent fighting fierce competitors, prejudice and adversity and her determination to never give up.
BOOK OF THE MONTH
I’ll give you the sun follows two twins as they grow up and face tremendous love and loss, the narrative switches between the two and before and after a traumatic event occurs in their lives that changes them forever. It explores themes of grief, sexuality, creativity and self expression through art, identity, guilt and the importance of family. When reading I’ll give you the sun I found the writing style was like nothing I had ever read before, the metaphors made the whole storyline so much more vivid through descriptions you would never expect and the characters who wove in and out of eachothers lives were complicated and so felt very real, as if you were following their journeys alongside them.
