MY BULLETPROOF HERO

A TRIBUTE TO MY GRANDFATHER

Heroes come in many forms. For some, Batman or Superman is a figure they admire. Others are inspired by a public figure, an older sibling, or God. For me, my grandfather has always been my hero. Grandpa John was a fighter pilot in the Marines, and after he retired, he served as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) lawyer. His stories of his experiences, accomplishments, journeys, and battles are amazing. His unwavering courage, dedication, and love for his country have left a mark on the U.S. and shaped how I view life and its challenges. Growing up, Grandpa John told me about how he risked his life to fly down to a fishing boat to save countless lives and how, on his first flight as a fighter pilot in the Korean War, a bullet went right through the

windshield of his fighter jet. As I listened, I couldn’t help but be in awe of the bravery it took to face such perilous situations. Once my grandfather retired and became a JAG lawyer, I occasionally accompanied him when he played golf at the El Toro Marine base. As we drove there, I remember seeing many Marines in formation, and I’m not sure if it was something on his car or if they just knew who he was, but they’d readjust and salute him as he’d pass by. It was amazing to witness. My grandfather earned many medals for bravery. After his passing, my dad had those medals framed and proudly showcased them on his desk in his home office. While my children never had the opportunity to meet their great-grandpa John, they love

hearing all about his successes, war stories, and unwavering determination. My son asked my father if he could “borrow” a few of Great-Grandpa John’s medals, and now he sleeps with them on his nightstand as a constant reminder of his heroism and love for America. Whenever I face a tough challenge or am met with fear or distress, the memory of my grandfather serves as the courage and motivation I need to press on. As I continue to walk through life, I carry his teachings and example with me, knowing I can face anything that comes my way with his influence. You’re my hero, Grandpa John!

Oct. 8 is National Heroes Day. Heroes inspire us to reach for the stars, push beyond our limits, and believe in our own resilience. Heroes remind us that we are not alone in our struggles and that we, too, can overcome adversity. They fuel our aspirations and are our greatest motivators on our journey through life. Who is your hero?

Unveiling the Historic Massacre of Kira Yoshinaka THE REVENGE OF THE RONIN

Never has there been a tale of revenge so blood-filled and epic as the 47 Ronin. Honorable and loyal to the end, these samurai warriors proved their dedication to their master in an incident that would become immortalized in Japanese literature, theater, and film. So, what led these samurai on a vengeful rampage? It started in April 1701, when nobleman Asano Naganori, also known as the lord of Ako, was treated with complete disrespect and arrogance by Kira Yoshinaka, a court official. After holding back his anger, Asano finally snapped. Asano revealed his sword and attacked

Kira in the middle of the palace’s main hall. Although Kira lived to tell the tale, Asano broke court rules and was ordered to kill himself. Following the court’s ruling, Asano ended his life on April 21, 1701. After his demise, Asano left behind his faithful 47 samurai, whose status was lowered to ronin (samurai with no leader). Crushed by his death, the ruthless men created a plan. The 47 Ronin laid low for two years by dispersing and living in “retirement.” The years passed, and the men were able to lower Kira’s guard. At this point, one of the ronin had reached his 80s and could not participate in the vengeful

plan. However, the remaining 46 men raided Kira’s estate on an early January morning in 1703. They fearlessly battled Kira’s samurai and decapitated Kira. The ronin then carried his head in a basket for miles to their deceased lord’s grave. Authorities were intensely conflicted on how to treat the vengeful massacre. While it broke the shogun’s rules, the act followed the respected samurai warrior code. Yet, in the end, all 46 men were ordered to kill themselves via self-disembowelment, hara-kiri. The ronin ranged in age from 15 to 77 years old. After their deaths, the ronin became legends and were buried alongside their master, Asano Naganori. Case’s Favorite Pizza Memory At the beginning of COVID-19, we were cooped up in the house, and my wife and I were searching for fun activities to keep the kids entertained. One night, I decided to have a make-your-own pizza night. There were no strings attached — if it sounded good to them, they could put it on their pizza! Finn and Harlow got creative. They created their own pizzas with syrup, blueberries, chocolate, gummy worms, and other goodies. Once they were done, they excitedly took their first bites and were disappointed to find out that it didn’t taste as yummy as it sounded.

Luckily, Dad made a regular pizza on the side for everyone to enjoy!

A GREENER FUTURE FOR ALL EXCITING ADVANCES IN THE WORLD OF SUSTAINABLE ENERGY

The hunt for sustainable energy sources continues! Throughout the past two decades, we have seen countless efforts around the globe to develop more environmentally friendly energy practices. You may have noticed solar panels appearing on roofs around your community or watched news reports about wind turbines offshore. These are far from the only efforts organizations, governments, and individuals are making. Two large-scale sustainability projects were announced that could lead to a more sustainable future. Solar Railways In many areas of Europe, the best way to get from point A to point B is by train. Switzerland alone has a national railway network that stretches over 2,000 miles. A startup called Sun-Ways recently announced

a plan to outfit Swiss railway lines with solar panels to generate additional power. Sun- Ways developed a specialized train car to lay down solar panels between the rails of the track. The company estimates that its solar panels can generate 2% of Switzerland’s annual energy consumption. At the time of writing this article, Sun-Ways is still waiting for a sign-off from the Federal Office of Transport to proceed, as concerns have been raised regarding the durability and reflectivity of the panels. New Wind Turbines Offshore wind farms are nothing new. They first appeared in 1991, but the technology has evolved immensely. The Spain-based startup X1 Wind has created a new floating wind turbine prototype that could change the entire industry. Located off the Canary

Islands, the X1 floating turbine is more efficient and environmentally friendly than other turbines. The best news? In March, it generated its first kilowatt-hour of power, opening the door for further manufacturing. These are just a couple of the many sustainability projects recently introduced. As long as we continue to develop and discover environmentally friendly practices, we can look forward to a greener future for all.
