Mississippi State earns overtime win over Arizona

Mississippi State players and fans dressed in all white for the Bulldogs’ "White Out” game against Arizona on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at Wade Davis Stadium. Mississippi State pulled ahead 14-0 thanks to numerous Arizona turnovers and had control throughout most of the first half. The Bulldogs led 14-7 at the break. However, the visiting Wildcats did some corrections at halftime, and were able to erase the Bulldogs lead in the second half and force overtime. Arizona tied the game at 21-21 in the fourth quarter, and both teams traded field goals, to finish regulation tied at 24-24. Mississippi State managed to score in overtime, and the Bulldogs defense stopped Arizona, to finish off a thrilling 31-24 overtime victory. Will Rogers paced Mississippi State with 161 yards and three touchdowns. Lideatrick Griffin was the Bulldogs leading receiver, finishing the game with five catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Teammate Jeffery Pittman had one catch for 29 yards, which went for the Bulldogs touchdown in the overtime period. Jo’quavious Marks rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown. He also caught four passes for 32 yards. Jayden de Laura paced the visiting Wildcats. He completed 32 of 46 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns. However, the MSU defense was not his friend, as the Bulldogs intercepted four passes in the game. The Bulldogs' defense also pulled out a key stop in overtime to help seal the win and move the program to 2-0 overall this season. Mississippi State opened SEC action against LSU on Saturday, September 16 in Starkville. The visiting Tigers roared to a 41-14 victory over the Bulldogs. The loss was Mississippi State's first this season, as the program is now 2-1 overall. LSU improved to 2-1 with the win. Despite a strong start by LSU, the eighth ranked Florida State Seminoles went on the war path and took down the No. 5 LSU Tigers 45-24 in the 2023 Camping World Kickoff Game on September 3 in Orlando, FL. LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels accounted for most of LSU's 460 yards in the season opener. Daniels completed 22 of 37 passes for 347 yards in the air, while leading the Tiger's ground game with 64 yards rushing. Florida State's offense had 494 total yards. The Seminoles were led by quarterback Jordan Travis, who accounted for five touchdowns in the win. Travis threw for 342 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for 38 yards and a touchdown. Jaheim Bell scored Florida State's additional touchdown, while teammate Ryan Fitzgerald kicked a 33- yard field goal in the win. Florida State returned to Tallahassee for it's 2023 home opener on Sept. 9 against Southern Miss. The Seminoles won the game 66-13 and climbed into the AP Poll Top 5. FSU moved to 3-0 with a 31-29 win over Boston College. LSU rebounded from the season opening loss with a 72-10 victory over Grambling State and a 41-14 victory over Mississippi State. By Brandon K. HOLIDAY HOOPSGIVING - For the fourth- consecutive year, Auburn will take part in the Holiday Hoopsgiving tournament held at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The Tigers will face Indiana on Saturday, Dec. 9, at a time still to be announced. It will mark the second all-time meeting between the two schools and first since a 1987 NCAA Tournament Second Round match up at the Indiana Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, IN. Like AU, the Hoosiers are coming off a 20+ win campaign and NCAA Tournament appearance. The tournament games will be aired on the ESPN Networks. For more information visit www.holidayhoopsgiving.com ALABAMA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - The Alabama women’s basketball head coach Kristy Curry has announced the 2023-24 schedule. The Crimson Tide’s complete 32-game schedule will include a total of 19 games, 11 non-conference and eight conference, that will be played inside Coleman Coliseum. Following Alabama’s exhibition match with the University of Alabama Huntsville (Nov. 1), the Tide will officially open the season Nov. 6 with four consecutive home games coming against Alabama State (Nov. 6), Winthrop (Nov. 10), Morehead State (Nov. 12) and South Florida (Nov. 16), respectively. After a road game at Little Rock (Nov. 19) starts a five- game road swing, the Crimson Tide will take on Clemson (Nov. 24), Arkansas Pine-Bluff (Nov. 25) and Gonzaga (Nov. 26) at the Van Chancellor Classic in Houston, Texas. UA will close the month by traveling to Syracuse, N.Y., to take on Syracuse for the ACC/SEC Challenge on Nov. 30. Alabama will remain at Coleman Coliseum for all six games in the month of December – Coastal Carolina (Dec. 6), Stephen F. Austin (Dec. 9), Samford (Dec. 10), University of Louisiana-Monroe (Dec. 17), Jacksonville (Dec. 20) and Mississippi Valley State (Dec. 31). Conference play will start after the New Year when the Tide welcomes Ole Miss to Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Jan. 4. In addition to the contest with the Rebels, Alabama will also host conference foes Arkansas (Jan. 14), LSU (Jan. 18), Kentucky (Jan. 28), Tennessee (Feb. 8), Auburn (Feb. 18), Mississippi State (Feb. 25) and Florida (Feb. 29) inside Coleman Coliseum. Road league contests include games at Missouri (Jan. 7), Georgia (Jan. 11), Auburn (Jan. 21), Arkansas (Feb. 1), Vanderbilt (Feb. 5), LSU (Feb. 11), South Carolina (Feb. 22) and Texas A&M (March 3). The Alabama men's basketball team will host the Clemson Tigers in the 2023 ACC/SEC Challenge. The game is set for Tuesday, November 28 at Coleman Coliseum. It will mark the 12th meeting between the Crimson Tide and Tigers in series history and second time in the last four seasons.
