an Society is the most trusted and recognised labelling scheme for plant-based goods. The verification symbol is now used on 60,000 products worldwide, including food, drink, clothes, household items, and more. Senior Business Development Manager at Smurfit Kap- pa Markham Vale, Mark Robinson, said: “At Smurfit Kappa, we pride ourselves on providing innovative and sustain- able packaging. We are thrilled to be the first packaging company to be recognised as Vegan Society Certified. This accreditation will give reassurances to customers with a preference for vegan products that all components of our finished products are cruelty-free and not from an- imal origin.” Business Development Marketing Manager at The Vegan Society, Ericka Durgahee, added, “Announcing our partnership with Smurfit Kappa couldn’t have come at a better time. Not only are they the first packaging company to register products with us, but they are also the 60,000th product to hold the Vegan Trademark. We’ve come a long way since we registered our first product in 1990.” Solenis Names Int’l Paper Winner Of 2021 Sustainability Award Solenis LLC, has awarded International Paper’s container- board mill located in Pine Hill, Alabama, as a winner of the 2021 Solenis Sustainability Award. The installation of an ultrasonic bed depth monitor and chemical automation on the plant’s raw water clarifier resulted in water savings of 1,300,000 gallons annually. The Solenis Sustainability Award recognizes specif- ic and verifiable customer projects that have delivered meaningful, measurable results against one of five sus- tainability indicators — reduced water use, reduced en- ergy use, improved carbon footprint, reduced waste and optimized raw material use. The Pine Hill project earned high marks against more than one of these indicators. Installing the new monitor helped the facility save water, but it also decreased consumption of polymer flocculant, cutting chemical transportation costs and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2,000 tons per year. “It’s gratifying to be involved with projects that protect both a customer’s bottom line and the planet we all inhab- it,” said Brent Taylor, Account Manager, Solenis. “It was our focus on innovation that enabled us to partner with IP to come up with a solution that addressed their challenge.” “Our collaboration with Solenis has enabled our facili- ty to implement a small change that has led to enormous impact,” said Vern Gomonit, Area Process Managerm In- ternational Paper. “We often talk about the IP Way — doing the right things, in the right ways, for the right reasons, all of the time. This award demonstrates our commitment to the IP Way and how, working together, we can meet our sustainability goals.”
