Looking for Sustainability Champions Gloves Off Sustainability Program
At Ryde Hospital we use over 3,000,000 non-sterile gloves each year, which will emit 78,000 KgCO2e, equivalent to driving 440,000 kms in a medium-sized petrol car, or driving around Australia 30 times.
Are you passionate about the environment and want to create a more sustainable and resource efficient workplace? If YES, we need you to be part of Ryde Hospital’s action to reduce carbon emissions and reduce waste going to landfill. Not only will you be contributing towards a greener hospital but also improving clinical safety and quality outcomes through improved hand hygiene processes. The gloves off initiative focuses on reducing unnecessary use of non-sterile gloves with an aim to reduce volumes of avoidable waste sent to landfill and improve hand hygiene compliance. We need champions across all parts of the hospital to drive change, educate, share insights – Nursing, Medical, Allied Health and Corporate Services If you are interested in being a sustainability champion - please come along to ELCA Meeting Room on Wednesday 12 February 11:30am – 12:15pm
General Manager’s Message Happy New Year to each and every one of you and thank you for all your hard work in 2024. January has seen a lot of redevelopment activity and there will be further significant changes on the campus in the first half of 2025; moving of ICU, Food Services, Physiotherapy, Engineering, Executive, Chapel/Multifaith Room, Integrated Booking Unit, People and Culture Support Services, Admin, Linen Store, Mortuary, Stores/Supply, Loading Dock and the Redevelopment team which will see the conclusion of the interim works and relocations. Then there will be sigh of relief as we enter a period of transition for the next 2 to 3 years while the main new hospital is built.
In the meantime, we have the Decommissioning of the Ryde Chapel on 10 February 2025 to which staff are welcome to attend, the Time in Service celebrations and the opportunity to nominate for the Exceptional People Awards. I would encourage all of you to look around and nominate someone as we have so many exceptional people at Ryde. If you have any questions about what is happening on the campus please do not hesitate to contact either the Redevelopment team or the Executive and seek some answers. We are looking to re-energise our Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee. If you are interested in being part of this please speak to your line manager, our WHS Consultant, Christina Lui, or a member of the Executive.

Ryde Redevelopment A Big Year for Ryde
Another big year is planned for the Ryde Hospital Redevelopment with January off to a big start. Ryde Hospital A/Redevelopment Manager Allana Thompson and the project team enjoyed a short respite over the summer break, coming back refreshed and ready to support the next months of staging moves. “There is so much activity planned for the start of this year and it is going to be incredibly busy as main works construction on the new building which is to start later this year,” Allana said.
Staging Works in 2024-25
On Wednesday 29 January, the physiotherapy outpatient department successfully moved to its interim location on level 2, Graythwaite Rehabilitation Centre. From February, the loading dock will start operating from its interim location off Denistone Rd. The new location has required meticulous planning by the hospital’s redevelopment and site operations teams, as delivery trucks will have new operating procedures when entering and exiting the campus. The first services to move to the new loading dock are stores and linen from the start of February, with food services to move in March. Upcoming moves for the campus include: - Environmental services, stores and linen to the Graythwaite car park from the start of February. - The bin compactors will move at the end of February to Macquarie Hospital, where they will be located until the redevelopment is complete. The interim mortuary will be operational at the end of February, operating under a new set of procedures. Staff will have noticed the Blue Gum High Forest path access to the hospital is now closed. Signage has been erected to advise staff and the public of the alternative routes to access the hospital. Operational User Groups have now started to support the relocation of ICU/CCU to the new interim building, scheduled for April. Allana said staff can expect changes to the after-hours parking in mid-February. Car park (P6) will close and be replaced by the opening of the undercroft car park, off Denistone Rd. While this is a change in location, the numbers of car parks remain the same. Staff are reminded parking is still available at the Church of the Latter-Day Saints (412-420 Blaxland Rd).

Medical News Farewell to Dr Secombe Dr Jocelyn Seccombe has been a steady and reliable presence at Ryde Hospital since she joined us in 2017. She has served throughout the COVID response, successfully navigated many evolutions of the electronic prescribing system, and maintained a steady, cheerful willingness to anchor the afterhours and night shifts. She has resigned her post with us at Ryde and is off to travel the country with her husband in their four wheel drive. We wish her well.

Focus on Allied Health Nutrition & Dietetics
Following the successful implementation of the new statewide breakfast menu, on 11 February we will be introducing our new statewide lunch and dinner menus. Just as with the breakfast menu, the new statewide lunch and dinner menu will reduce menu and clinical variation across local health districts and health facilities, providing patients with choice and variety while meeting their nutritional needs. Lunch and learn sessions are being held providing information about the change. The slide packs will
be available on the statewide menu SharePoint site once they have taken place. You can find more information about the project, including FAQs to help sites prepare, and detailed operational plans by scanning the QR code to visit the statewide menu SharePoint site. If you have any questions or issues, please raise them with your manager in the first instance. You can also contact the statewide menu implementation team on HSNSW-StatewideMenu@health.nsw.gov.au or the statewide menu support line 02 8644 2700 for urgent queries.

People Matters Action Plan
Following the completion of the PMES in September, the Executive Team attended a briefing session to unpack the results and to develop an PMES Action Plan for Ryde. I’m pleased to announce the action plan for Ryde Hospital PMES is now available on the intranet at the People Matter Employee Survey.
This plan demonstrates our commitment to listening to what you said and improving your working day at Ryde Hospital. I strongly encourage you to review the results and consider what actions you could undertake regarding the results. Some of the highlights of this year’s plan include:
• Establishing a Wellness Group through an Expression of Interest process to support staff wellbeing
• Executive Walkarounds to encourage communication and employee voice
• A staff survey to go out regarding the Redevelopment so areas of feedback can be provided on how to improve change management
For more initiatives and further information, please refer to the PMES Action Plan. Throughout the year I’ll provide updates on the plan and the progress made. If you have any questions about the action plan, please discuss them with your manager. In response to feedback from the PMES survey, one key area highlighted was the importance of flexible work practices. We are committed to leading the way in demonstrating how flexible work can be implemented across teams, understanding that there is no one-size-fits-all solution and different types of flexibility will suit different roles. This is about rethinking where, when, and how work can be done and encouraging both managers and employees to have discussions within your teams to determine what flexible work arrangements may by suitable. NSLHD offers a variety of flexible work practices to help create a supportive and adaptable work environment. These include: Temporary Individual Rostering Arrangement (TIRA) Compressed working week Part time work Career Break Scheme Job sharing Time in Lieu Flexible rostering Activity based working/Hot desking Flexible start/finish times Teleworking/remote/working from home Supporting and implementing flexible work is beneficial as it can increase job satisfaction, improve teamwork inclusion and outputs, assist in employee retention and in attracting talent through our recruitment processes. For more information and resources, please visit the intranet Flexible Work Practices page or the NSLHD Working Flexibly document, or reach out to the HR Business Partnering team for further support and guidance.
