THE SUMMER OF BULLS AND BEARS

I hope this newsletter finds all of you doing well and staying cool during this hot Nevada summer. Good news: Fall is just around the corner. Hang in there! In addition to hot temps this summer, we’ve experienced some extreme volatility in the stock market and an economic downturn. After several years of record- breaking gains in the stock market, this year has seen huge losses in stocks, and experts are saying that we’re transitioning from a “bull” market to a “bear.” This got me thinking, why do we call a rising market a bull market and a shrinking market a bear market? Intuitively, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. A bull market simply means stock prices are rising. A bear market simply means prices are going down. It is a way to describe the market. Technically, an increase of 20% or a decrease of 20% or more from a recent high or low puts us in a bull or bear market. So, why the animals? No one is really sure why we use these terms, but they’ve been around for hundreds of years, since the earliest stock markets in Europe in the 18th century. One theory is that bulls kill by thrusting up with their horns (market goes up during a bull market) and bears kill by thrusting down with their paws (markets go down during a bear market.)

Another theory dates from the 18th century. When someone sold something they didn’t own yet (hoping they could get it later at a lower price), they would call that person who sold the “bearskin” a “bearskin jobber.” These people hoped that prices would decrease — or, basically hoped for a bear market. And what about the bull? One theory is that after the bear became a common term for a downturn in the market, people started using bull to reference a rising market, because in less-civilized times people used to make bears and bulls fight each other for sport. So, according to this theory, a bull was used since it was seen as the enemy of the bear. Bull or bear market, I hope all of you are safe and enjoying the end of summer. Thank you all for being my friends, family, and clients. No matter what happens in the world, our personal relationships bring us the most happiness. I hope all of you are spending and enjoying the time you have with the people you love.

CHOOSING JOY EVERY DAY 3 Ways to Foster a Positive Attitude

Keep a gratitude journal. When we think about gratitude and thankfulness, our minds usually think about Thanksgiving. But we don’t need to wait for a special day to show gratitude. Things happen to us every day that we should be grateful for. If you’re struggling to acknowledge your blessings,

In today’s society, we are faced with tragic stories and upsetting information, no matter where we turn. This can quickly lead us

to a negative mindset where we believe things can’t be fixed and will only get worse, so it’s even more important now to establish a positive mindset. Though it might be easier to bury your head in the sand, fostering positivity in your life will provide you with many benefits. But doing so is easier said than done. If you’re unsure where to begin, try out some of these methods to help you get started.

keep a gratitude journal and write a few things you are thankful for each day. Over time, that thought process will seep into your daily life.

Surround yourself with positive people. The people we associate with play a huge role in our

mental well-being. If you’re constantly around people who put you down or tell you that you can’t accomplish certain things, you will feel worse about yourself — or even believe them. You need to block the negative people from your life and surround yourself with those who think optimistically.

Focus on the silver lining. When something bad or unfortunate happens, we are quick to think about the negatives and how they will impact us in the future. Instead, we should be searching for a silver lining. You can find a positive in any situation, but you’ll have to put in the effort to flip your perspective.

Establishing a positive mindset in today’s world may be difficult, but it is not impossible if you develop a strategy and follow through with it. 2 725-867-8495 | WWW.CLAGGETTLAW.COM | WORKERS’ COMPENSATION AND PERSONAL INJURY
