Eliot played an important role in Durrell’s literary career, and in 1937 recommended to his colleagues at Faber that they publish his first work, The Black Book . Although that book ended up being published in Paris, Eliot would go on to be Durrell’s editor at Faber, with the firm pub - lishing Panic Spring in 1938, and went on to publish the Alexandria Quartet among other works.
