The Two Greatest Sons Anyone Could Ask For Celebrating Boomer and Mason for Father’s Day

W

ith Father’s Day fast approaching, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my kids, and my own approach to being a dad. A lot of guys get a pile of gifts for the holiday, and of course I always appreciate a call or

a quick visit from my sons, but honestly, the best possible gift I could receive is to watch as they grow and succeed in life. With both of my kids out on their own pursuing their dreams, I really feel like Mary and I raised a couple of unbelievably good people. How much credit I can take for that, I’m not quite sure, but either way, it’s deeply gratifying to see them doing their thing. Growing up, my kids always called me “The Professor” because of my tendency to go off on long tangents, talking and talking and offering all kinds of advice. But I never wanted to be overbearing or controlling. Instead, I tried to offer a steady stream of guidance without trying to dictate exactly who they would become. Though the expectations were clear from the start, I tried to avoid hounding them about too much. When our 30-year-old — we call him Boomer — got to an age where he could really understand where I was coming from, I told him and his younger brother, “You know, you guys don’t come with an instruction manual. Though I might make some mistakes, I do it out of love and nothing else.” Though I certainly did make my share of errors along the way, I can confidently say that both my kids have grown up to be amazing young men. Boomer went straight out of high school to Arizona State, where he first secured a Liberal Arts degree and later returned to pick up a degree in Cellular Molecular Biochemistry. Now he’s waiting to hear back from a few medical schools, shadowing a local doctor, working, and doing some community service around town. Meanwhile, Mason, my 24-year-old, is a second-year analyst at an investment bank in New York, working directly on deals and moving up the ranks at a rapid pace. Both he and his brother are incredibly smart and hardworking — no matter how far ahead of them you might be in their field, they’ll always just outwork you

and catch up. Whenever they have an opportunity to improve, professionally or personally, they are willing to sit down and actively work on it. Both of my sons have overcome adversity and have grown into a couple of well-rounded guys. For Father’s Day, Boomer usually goes to Mass with Mary and me in the morning, and then we’ll go grab lunch sometimes with my own older brother, who, with the big age gap between us, was in many ways like a father to me growing up. And of course, I’ll be thinking of my own dad, that incredible man who worked so hard for my family and everyone he cared about, and who taught me the value of hard work and keeping close to the people you love. My sons, and family in general, are a huge part of my life. Father’s Day or not, I never want that to change.

3 Awesome Dads

Fathers Who Put Their Lives on the Line for Their Kids

Greg threw rocks until it fled. His son was hurt but made a full recovery in the hospital over the coming weeks.

Brian Munn gave his son a liver transplant.

Artur Magomedov saved his daughters from ISIS.

When doctors discovered that baby Caleb Munn had a rare disease called biliary atresia, they told his parents that he was unlikely to survive past age 2 without a liver transplant. Luckily, his father was a perfect match, and he eagerly donated part of his liver in March of 2015 to save his son’s life.

Artur Magomedov was devastated to discover that his wife had taken his 3- and 10-year-old daughters from their home in Dagestan under the cover of night, flown to Turkey, and crossed into Syria to join ISIS. But he resolved to get his kids back. After a long, hazardous journey, he arrived in Tabqa to embrace his two daughters. To leave the caliphate — under penalty of death — they hitched a ride to the border one night and crawled along a railway line until they were within 70 meters of the border. Then they ran under fire from Turkish border guards until they could scramble into tall grasses. After some help from the Russian consulate in Istanbul, they made it back home, together again and safe.

Greg Alexander battled a bear for his son’s life.

While camping in the backcountry of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Greg Alexander was startled awake at dawn by the screams of his 16-year-old son, Gabriel. He rushed out of his hammock to see a black bear dragging his son away by the head. Without hesitation, he kicked the beast in the side, and when that didn’t work, he leapt onto its back and started punching it in the face. When the bear finally released Gabriel,

How PT Jennifer Alcala Embodies the HealthMasters Ideal A Dedication to Growth

At HealthMasters, we pride ourselves on our ability to achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients, but we also ensure that we never rest on our laurels. Instead, we encourage ongoing education and improvement in all of our physical therapists and PTAs, constantly equipping our experts with new tools to provide patients with speedy, powerful, and meaningful recovery. Perhaps no one embodies this spirit of personal and professional growth better than Jennifer Alcala, who right now is in the midst of an intensive fellowship program through Evidence in Motion. Aside from her regular patient load, she’s taken on a massive amount of work, giving up her weekdays to study and many of her weekends to head to San Antonio to participate in labs and further educational events. “It’s helped me to take on more of a manual approach to therapy,” she says. “It’s all about refining my techniques, as well as understanding more about the science of pain and how to encourage our patients to manage it more effectively.” Before Jennifer stepped into the physical therapy career, she was on track to become a pharmacist. But when her grandfather had a sudden stroke, she realized the immense benefits that physical

therapy could have for patients. “I used to hang out with him at the nursing home,” she says. “During his recovery treatment, he went

through a ton of physical therapy, and I got to witness firsthand how his therapists built a personal relationship with him while guiding him back to health. It was really powerful to see.” She began her career with HealthMasters, then left for a stint at an inpatient rehabilitation hospital. But she missed the guidance of Louis Zuniga and the outpatient approach to therapy. “Louis is a wonderful individual to work for,” she says, “pushing us at every turn to pursue ways to grow our abilities.” Lately, most of her time outside the clinic has been dedicated to her studies, but when she gets a brief break, she enjoys working out, playing basketball, and hanging out with her family, especially her younger brothers, who live in town. We’re so appreciative of all that Jennifer has done for HealthMasters in her nearly five years of working with us. We’ve seen her already-considerable skills grow with continued study, and can’t wait to see all the fantastic things she accomplishes with her patients moving forward!

The Lightforce Class IV Deep Tissue Laser is the perfect alternative to expensive surgery or addictive drugs. Until recently, this kind of technology was only available to professional athletes. In science fiction stories, visions of the future are either societies of peace and scientific achievement or depressing dystopias where children fight to the death for the entertainment of the wealthy elite. Personally, we’re hoping for peace and science, and breakthroughs in health care seem to be bringing us closer to that bright utopia. At HealthMasters Physical

Therapy, we’re excited to bring the future of recovery and pain relief to the present day in the form of our Lightforce Class IV Deep Tissue Laser .

“Wait, aren’t lasers dangerous?”

In addition to wildly different possibilities of the future, sci-fi stories also like to replace bullets and bombs with deadly lasers. But don’t worry, the real lasers you’ll find at our clinics aren’t going to be used in Star Wars-style space battles. Instead, this FDA-approved treatment

Cut Down on Flight Costs With This Simple Rule

Save Big on Airfare With This Simple Rule The Best Time to Book a Flight

In case you haven’t noticed, traveling is expensive. It can feel like you’re signing away your soul when you sit down to plan a vacation. But when it comes to flights, there’s good news: They’re getting cheaper! According to a 2017 report published by online travel company ODIGEO, long-distance trips across Europe fell 7 percent last year. Luckily, the same trend is reflected in North American airlines as they engage in a price war to woo a growing base of ultrafrugal travelers. Still, a $600 summer flight to Honolulu isn’t exactly pocket change. What’s worse, flight prices are slippery; CheapAir.com’s 2017 Annual Airfare Study determined that the fares for any given trip go up or down an average of 71 times, about $33 each shift. When you purchase your flight is nearly as important as where you’re going. But how do you choose a booking window that will maximize your savings?

According to the CheapAir.com study, in which they evaluated 921 million airfares, the best time to book is 21–105 days in advance of your flight, on average. If you want to get even more specific, try to book 55–75 days out, and book on a Sunday. Many travelers swear by Tuesday and Wednesday bookings, but as Condé Nast Traveler reports, Expedia and the Airlines Reporting Corporation say that Sunday is the way to go, based on data from billions of flights. Tuesday and Wednesday are usually the cheapest days to actually fly though. The CheapAir.com study also pinpoints the absolute best windows for specific seasons: 54 days for winter trips, 75 days for spring, 76 days for summer, and 45 days for fall. Of course, these are averages, but if you stick to these rules and check fares regularly on sites like Kayak.com, SkyScanner.com, Momondo.com, and on the handy app Hopper, you can rest easy knowing you’re getting close to the best price possible.
