A wealth of material is arranged in this commentary, which begins its fortieth year of publica tion. An effort has been made to make the helps practical and easily applicable to present-day conditions. A blackboard out line and a list of lesson questions are at tractive features of every lesson. Mate rial is provided for the teaching of all ages. 237 pages. Revell Co. Cloth. Price 90 cents, Peloubefs Select. Notes by Amos R. Wells,' Since the material for this year’s “Notes”|8was prepared, the editor, Dr. Wells, has joined his coworker o f many years, Dr. Francis N. Peloubet, in the pres ence of the Lord. This volume, therefore, in a special sense is a memorial to Dr. Wells; Allan H. Wilde, writing of him, says, “ Dr. Wells had the remarkable fac ulty of discovering vital facts and truths and the ability to present them systemati cally, interestingly, and with spiritual ap plication.” Pastors,, superintendents, and especially Sunday-school teachers will find this sixtieth annual edition of inimitable value. It is a storehouse of biblical infor mation gathered from the great libraries of the world. Along with chronological charts and maps are numerous text illustrations and four full-page reproductions in color o f religious paintings o f the early mas ters. 371 pages. W. A.‘ Wilde Co. Cloth. Price $2.00. With the text that forms the title as his point of departure, Dr. Barnhouse develops an exposition of the central crisis in the life of Christ along the line of the “post poned kingdom” theory. He contends that the first phase o f Christ’s ministry was ex clusively Jewish, while He offered the king dom to the Jewish nation. Following their rejection of His person and program, He turned to the establishment of His church among Jew and Gentile alike. The new contribution to this theory is the study of seven new words which at this time ap peared in the vocabulary o f Christ, each of which indicated a change in His pro cedure. Some off the interpretations of Scripture contained in this book, such- as the con tention that Mary considered her Son to be mentally unbalanced, seem at best debatable. For plainness of meaning and for evangel istic appeal, this book is noteworthy. 185 pages. Fleming H. Revell Co. Cloth. Price $1.50. Dr. Evans’ prolific pen has again con tributed to the enrichment of Christian, literature, in this compact five-chapter treatment o f death and the hereafter. In this little booklet, he has been enabled by God to offer not only comfort for those who mourn, but also stimulus to holy con duct for those who live. The last chapter, “ Our Future Reward,” presents clearly the oft-neglected yet vital truth of the be liever’s appearance “at the judgment seat o f Christ.” 60 pages. Bible Institute Col- portage Ass’n. Art paper. Price 40 cents. This is an attractive fourteen-page book let containing “The Vaudois Teacher” by John Greenleaf Whittier and several pages o f Scripture quotations under the heading, “ Thy Word is Truth.” The art cover pre sents, in colors, a picture o f the nativity. It is the author’s thought that Sunday- school teachers will welcome the booklet for Christmas giving. She also offers post cards, seals, tracts, and religious booklets suitable: for various occasions. Mrs. N. H. Griffin, 1624 El Molino Ave., Pasadena, Calif. Paper. Price 10 cents. This is a course o f Bible study covering a period of three years, designed for junior children in- the hero worship stage of life. The material for the pupils has been pre pared by Esther Ellinghusen, a graduate o f the University o f Nebraska. She has been teaching for a number of years in the Los Angeles city schools, under the de partment of psychology and educational research. The material is edited by Hen rietta Mears, director of Christian educa tion at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, Calif. This three-year course is divided into twelve sections of thirteen lessons each; the first year covers the first five books of the Bible; the second year embraces the period from Joshua to David; and the third year takes the pupil from Solomon to Ezra. The only part of the course available at present is the first quarter o f the first year. An _examination of the material compels admiration and calls for praise. From beginning to end, the pupil is occupied with the Bible. The home work is arranged for daily Bible reading with questions require ing written answers. In addition to this written work, the illustrations prepared by William C. Ullrich call for coloring on the part of the pupil, all o f which appeals to the imagination and instructs the mind. Bible school teachers who desire a thor ough course in Bible instruction adapted to junior classes will find in these lessons material of the highest order. In Sunday- schools where the Bible is received as the Word o f God, this course of studies will increasingly find a place. Gospel Light Press, 1760 North Gower St., Hollywood, Calif. Price 15 cents.
