Bible Verses and Personal Testimonies Concerning God’s Goodness. Part III. — Message. Leader’s Message. Hymn—“We’re Marching to Zion.” Benediction—Jude 24, 25. Meditation on the Lesson In the New Testament, Timothy is the outstanding example of Christian youth. That he was a child o f godly parentage, we learn from Paul’s second letter to him, where Paul referred to “the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice,” and where he declared “that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” Paul called Timothy “my own son in the faith.” He was a continual joy to Paul, who had found him at Lystra, and had led him to the Lord. His mother was a con verted Jewess, but his father was a Greek. Not only because he was a young man of exemplary conduct, having good report of the brethren, but also because of his an cestry, being partly Jewish and partly Gen tile, he was specially adapted for the work o f assisting Paul in his missionary labors from place to place, first among the Jews, and then among the Gentiles. Paul admonished Timothy to separate himself from the world and make himself “meet for the Master’s use.” Paul also ad vised him to “flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace.” In his first letter to Timothy, Paul refers specially to his youth, and gives to all young people a pattern to follow: “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example o f the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Tim. 4:12). “Disre gard” is perhaps a better word than “de spise.” There may be an inclination to dis regard the testimony of very young Chris tians. Paul wanted Timothy to act so that no one could disregard his testimony. He gave specific instructions how to attain this high standard: “ Be thou an example of the believers”—become a pattern: “in word”—all that is said in public or in private; “in conversation”.—b e h a v i o r, conduct; “ in charity”—love; “in faith”— the foundation; “in purity”—simple sin cerity. Only a life yielded to the Spirit can follow this pattern. What a challenge each one receives as he reads, this exhortation from the aged apostle! Youth has a unique place in the church. People are specially interested in the young. For this reason, the testimony o f youth is effective and impressive. How much more effective it is, when the youth is clean, pure, and loving, with a burning zeal and an earnest faith. In an election, the first votes recorded count all the day long and so encourage the party all through the anxious hours of polling. Jesus Christ and His cause in the morning o f their lives, their whole existence influ ences their time, and their encouragement to the good cause is lifelong. Young peo ple, remember this!—.Spurgeon. II. T he D ifference Two veteran Christians went to examine a little girl who had been converted, and who wished to join the church. After hearing how the change took place in her life, one o f the older Christians said, “Well, dear, were you a sinner before this change took place ?” “Yes, sir.” “Are you a sinner now?” “Yes, sir. I think I am a greater sinner than ever.” “ Then what is the difference?” he in quired. She thought for a moment, and finally said, “ Then I was a sinner who ran into sin; now I am a sinner who runs from it.” “Flee also youthful lusts” (2 Tim. 2 :22).— S elected . III. A n O utline “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them” (Eccl. 12 : 1 ). Thank You ! For two years, Herbert H. Tay, a pro fessor at the San Dimas School for Boys, San Dimas, Calif,, and formerly a co worker with the eminent archaeologist, Dr. Melvin Grove Kyle, has been giving to readers of T he K ing ’ s B usiness some valuable material entitled “Walks and Talks in Holy Places.” These brief com ments, appearing in connection with the In ternational Lesson Commentary, have de scribed the scene o f each week’s lesson, as only a close student of the Land, of the Book, and of the subject o f archaeology could describe it. Most of the important scenes in Bible lands have now been men tioned, and it has seemed impractical to prolong the series. This word o f cordial thanks is due Mr. Tay for the help he has willingly and gratuitously given to T he K ing ’ s B usiness and to its subscribers.
