4. The way o f victory. The weapon used was the Word o f God; drawn from its scabbard and properly wielded, it has power to silence and to put to flight the one who has long had power over humankind. The method that our Lord used was striking, and it was an illustration o f the principle of all victory,— complete dependence upon God, complete confidence in God, and complete obedience to God. There is no other way to victory for the Christian when opposed by Satan. Taking the place of a real man, and wield ing the sword of the Spirit, all the attacks of Satan may be defeated. We should note, too, in this lesson, Satan’s personality, dignity, power, and limitations. Lesson Questions 3 :13-17. What period o f Jesus’ life on earth began with His baptism? How old was He at this time? Explain the words, “to fulfill all righteousness.” What other reasons were there for His baptism ? What was God’s commendation o f His Son? At the baptism o f Christ, how many members of the Trinity were present? 4:1-11. Why did Jesus go into the wil derness? What is significant about the time at which Satan attacked Christ? What personal message d o ' you get from this fact? What comforting words does God give us in the time of temptation (1 Cor. 10:13) ? Is a demonstration of the truth o f the Word o f God ever needful? What was wrong with Satan’s use of Psalm 91:11, 12? What is to be our weapon in time o f temptation? What are some o f the names given to the Word o f God (Eph. 6 :11, 13, 17) ? What was the purpose of the temptation o f Christ (Heb. 4:15)? What does this lesson reveal regarding the per son and work of Satan? When Jesus was Baptized M a t t h e w 3 :1-17 Memory Verse: “ This is my beloved Son, . . . in whom I am well pleased” (Matt. 3:17). Approach : Jesus, when He was still a little Child, was taken back by His parents to their home in Nazareth. Here He

This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” God was telling to all the people that Jesus was His Son, the promised Messiah. Many people were gathered about John while Jesus was being baptized. They heard the voice of God telling them that Jesus was His Son. At once some were ready to hear what Jesus had to say. Now the time had come for Him to begin preaching. Golden Text Illustration One o f the earliest patients at the dis pensary in Toro (Uganda) was an old man who came to receive medicine for an ulcer. He became possessed with a desire to know the truth, and was put into the old men’s Bible class for instruction. One day he came to the missionary with stream ing eyes and said, “ I want to be baptized.” The missionary asked him, “Mpisi, will baptism save us ?” And he answered, “ Oh, no, only Jesus who died on the cross.” “ Then what is the use of baptism ?” “Well,” said he, “ Christ told us to believe and be baptized, and it shows we want to leave our bad habits and follow the habits o f Christ.” That simple-minded, untutored old man had caught the true meaning and purpose of baptism—salvation from sin through the Saviour’s atonement, an act o f obedience to Christ’s command, and a sign and seal o f the covenant o f grace, followed by a life of true devotion.— -S u n d a y S chool T im e s . Object Lesson T h e W ater B rothers Objects: Two bottles filled with water, one tall and slender, the other short and wide, two corks, and some black ink. Lesson : I want to introduce you to two of my friends: Slim Water and Fat Water. These two friends are like you, in that they attend Sunday-school. But in other ways, they are entirely different. Children in the same home are often different. My friend, Fat, remembered the words of the psalmist, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” He accepted Christ as his Saviour, and at every opportunity he accepted and obeyed the Word o f God. I will place this cork marked “ God’s Word” in the mouth of the bottle to show how he was protected. Slim came to Sunday-school just to have as much fun as possible. He did not care to hear and obey God’s Word. (Twist one end of a stiff wire around the neck of this bottle, allowing the other end to pro ject upward about three or four inches. Make a crook in the wire, turning the end back toward the bottle. Fasten a rubber band, which has a cork attached to it, to the end o f the wire. The rubber band must be tight enough to pull the cork out when placed in the bottle.) This is the way Slim acted whenever his teacher or minister tried to teach God’s Word to him. He refused to accept it. (The cork, being loose-fitting, comes out every time.) Now see what happens 1 The heart is open, and this ink, which represents sin, can easily be dropped in. The water is all discolored. The ink does not reach the water in the other bottle. Many boys have turned out to be thieves, because they re fused to hear God’s Word which says: “ Thou shalt not steal.” Others have com mitted other terrible sins, because they did not know that God’s Word says: “ Be sure your sins will find you out.” But those who believed and obeyed God’s Word were protected and kept pure.

cause he went about preaching to the peo ple, saying, “ Prepare ye the way of the Lord,” and he told them to repent of their sins and be baptized. John was Jesus’ herald, or messenger. His work was to prepare the people for Jesus and to an nounce His coming. So it was that when Jesus was ready to begin His preaching, He came to John and asked to be baptized. John was sur prised. Why should Jesus, the sinless Son of God, wish to be baptized by him, a man? But Jesus said that it must be. A l though He was God, He obeyed all the laws of man. So John baptized Him, and as He stepped out of the water, a very strange and wonderful thing happened. John looked and “the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him : And lo a voice from heaven, saying,
