her to his home. Meanwhile, he leaves with her an invisible attendant, perfectly competent to take care o f her in his ab sence, and a book of instructions about the kingdom which she is daily to examine and to study. He puts her into telephonic com munication with himself, so that at any time he may be in touch with her and she with him in all matters wherein she needs guidance, support, and comfort; and he departs, telling her that he is likely to come back at any time, and that she is to watch and to wait for him. What would she do under the circumstances ? She would leave her poverty, wretchedness, and rags be hind her. She would accept the book of instructions about the kingdom and the king, and study it perpetually and dili gently, that she might be prepared for her entrance into the court and the court life. She would not fool and flirt with any other man, would she? I f she did, she would be treacherous to her king. And, above all, she would not walk arm-in-arm in the streets with persons who had been con spirators against his life. She would sep arate herself unto her royal bridegroom; live in perpetual expectation of his return, and avail herself of the unfailing means of communication with him. This I under stand to be exactly what the Lord teaches us in His Word about the secrets of holi ness.—A. T. P ierso n . JANUARY 6 The Comfort of the Holy Ghost “ Walking in the comfort o f the Holy Ghost” (Acts 9 :31). “ The comfort of the Holy Ghost,” what a full theme! The Holy Ghost is, officially, the “ Comforter” of the people of God. It is one definite function of the Holy Ghost to comfort God’s children in their trials. Dwelling in them, He not only enlightens and leads, and strengthens and sanctifies them, but He comforts them also. . . He ministers to us the precious Word of God in power. “ This is for me,” we in stinctively say, as He brings that word to our remembrance. It does us good. We see a bright rift in the dark cloud, and perceive the lovely “silver lining.” A thrill runs through our hearts. We lift up our heads, and go on our way rejoicing! Walk ing in the comfort o f the Holy Ghost 1 —J. T. W. JANUARY 7 Secret of Victory “ Remember Jesus Christ" (2 Tim. 2 :8, R .V .). These words form a part o f the last message which the Apostle Paul sent be fore his martyred spirit took its flight. “When I am gone, Timothy,” we can hear him say, “your heart will naturally be sad; I would not expect it to be otherwise. We have covered a good deal o f ground to gether, you and I. The strongholds of

from without, and yet not have the Spirit dwelling in his heart, and unless the Spirit of Christ be in us, we are none of His. “If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am be come sounding brass, or a clanging cym bal” ; “I am just a jazz band.” , You may be able to define the Christian faith, and to defend it. You may have a faith that will work wonders, a strong will, and a strik ing personality; and yet if you lack love, you are nothing. Those of us who have only a little faith, a faith that can scarcely move molehills, should therefore be doubly careful that we learn to love. Sts® W . Y. F ullerton . JANUARY 4 Answers Stored Up “ That he maintain the ccmse o f his ser vant, and the cause of his people Israel at all times [‘the thing o f a day in his day’ —margin], as the matter shall require” (1 Ki. 8:59). We have here the idea that God’s chil dren may look for a treasuring up in their Father’s heart o f their petitions till the right time shall come for a bestowment o f the gracious answer. God is a God of order, and can only give “the thing of a day in his day,” so He keeps us long wait ing, just because the hour is not yet come, and answers are, we believe, withheld from our sight, while the prayer is accepted and stored, if we may so express it, among the treasures of God, to be practically remem bered when the right time comes, “as the matter shall require.” Have we not to learn, ever more and more, that the supply o f yesterday will not meet the needs of today, and then to realize in its full comfort the assurance that our God’s resources are unfailing, that His “ fresh springs” never run dry ^Ê -S elected . JANUARY 5 An Allegory "I wtll betroth thee unto me in righteous ness” (Hos. 2:9). Here is a maiden, in poverty, misery, wretchedness, and rags. A royal prince betroths her to himself. He changes her abode, and gives her a temporary dwelling separate from her former associates. He is going away to administer certain affairs about his kingdom, and to build for her a palatial residence; and then he is coming back to receive her to himself, and to take

“In his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old” (Isa. 63:9). “I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you” (Isa. 46:4). “ Carried” ! All the days”—days of sunshine and days of sorrow, days of glad ness and days of gloom, days of bright ness and days of bereavement, days o f tri umph and days o f tears, days of peace and days of perplexity, days of delight and days of dread, days of liberty and days of limitation, days of praise and days of de preciation, days of comfort and days of care, days o f kindness and days of cruelty, days of blessing and days o f blame. He will carry—“all the days.”; This is our need! With what special care and tenderness the “lambs” are carried! “He shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom” (Isa. 40:11), What surpassing privileges are theirs who cultivate the lamb-like spirit, and sweetly yield to Him 1 Oh, to be lamb-like 1 Oh, to be “in his bosom” 1 Oh, to be “carried”—there! — B. M ’ C a ll B arbour . “ He leadeth me” is true for all the past! With all its clouds, and all its sun shine, too! And true for all the days that are to come— “He leadeth me,” and— He will carry through. —E. G. W estbu ry . JANUARY 2 Imputed Strength “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Prov. 3:6 ). The story is told of a young sentry, in whom ICing Albert of Belgium showed particular interest. The day’s march had been long and wearisome. Fearing that the youth would, under physical weakness, sleep at his post and thus dishonor his country and its sovereign to whom he had sworn willing allegiance, the king him self, unknown to the lad, followed in his path all through the night hours, ready to add his own strength, when need arose, to that o f his weary subject. Thus, Chris tian, it is with thee. One walks by thy side in the darkness. Thy path is His— because thou hast made His thine. Mind not the weariness, the weakness, the hard ness ; One shares it all with thee. A l mighty strength is His—and therefore thine.— S elected . In all thy ways acknowledge Him, And He will lead thy life; Yea, He will order every step Through joy, through woe, and strife. To those who seek His kingdom first Shall all “these things” be given, And He will care for fleshly needs Till they are safe in heaven. — A rdis R u t h R eitm eie r .
