lowship with Christ which secures to us our inheritance. . . The only fear begotten in the soul by the Spirit of adoption is that which filial love suggests—the fear o f grieving Him who is all things for us, who has not only loved us with an everlasting love, but shed His own love abroad in our hearts.— M arcu s R ain sfo rd . JANUARY 18 The Glance That Guides “Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule" (Psa. 32:9). We can have guidance either by the Father’s eye or by the bit and bridle of cir cumstances. If, like the horse or the mule, we have no spiritual understanding, in stead of guiding us with His eye, God has to curb us with His hand. There can, of course, be no guidance by the eye unless there is constant attention on the one side and constant superintendence on the other. The promise, “I will counsel thee with mine eye upon thee,” implies the existence of a disposition of watchfulness and of readiness to note God’s hand in the mani fest occurrences o f life. . . . Where the look has been scorned, the bridle must be fastened. . . . How often the look has been lost upon us because we have been out of touch with God—claiming to be His friends, yet following Him afar off; sad and depressed because o f no perfect under standing ; knowing nothing of freedom be cause under the bit and bridle; unable to sing because of the bit in the mouth! —J. G regory M a n t l e . Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but Thou are mighty; Hold me with Thy powerful hand; Bread o f Heaven Feed me till I want no more. §|fe—W . W il l ia m s . JANUARY 19 When Comfort and Strength Combine “ The secret place o f the' most High” (Psa. 91:1). The soul that thus lives in secret com munion with God comes to know Him well. He is a Refuge or Hiding Place in danger or distress; He is a Strong Fortress, inwhich we may safely and quietly live. . . . “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth [or truthfulness] shall be thy shield and buckler.” His feathers, says a Frepch author, are soft and warm, but not very strong; His shield and buckler, strong, but rather cold. Ah, but His feathers and His shield—these give both comfort and Security . . . . What a shelter! — J. E lder C u m m in g , JANUARY 20 The Blood That Saves “ When I see the blood, I m il pass overt you" (Ex. 12:13). God did not say to Israel, and He does: not say to us, “When I see your good; works, your good intentions, your right eousness—” but, “When I see the blood, I will pass over you,” What made those Israelites safe in Goshen when the Egyp tians were all exposed to death? It was: not their righteousness, but it was an act of obedience; it was putting the blood upon their homes.. . . If you are sheltered behind the blood, you are as safe as if you were in heaven today. Some one has said that a little fly in Noah’s ark was as safe as the' elephant. It was not the strength of the elephant that made him safe, but it was the ark that saved the elephant as well as the
fly. It is the blood of Christ that ’ saves us.—D. L. M oody . JANUARY 21 Stronghold of Faith “ This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith" (1 John 5:4). This indeed is strong faith, but it is the gift of a strong God; it does not depend in the least on what the believer can do for himself, but on what the Almighty has engaged to do for him, and in him, and by him; for He requires and commands it in this high degree; there is grace suffi cient to bring it into use and practice as far as the commands go, all things prom ised being possible to him that believeth, and they who have trusted most to the faithfulness of God, who against hope be lieved in hope, have experienced that God did never leave them, nor forsake them. — W . R o m a in e . He loveth always, faileth never, Oh, rest in Him, today, forever! — S elected . JANUARY 22 Blessed Fullness "H e that believeth on me, as the scrip ture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers o f living water . . . This spake he of the Spirit” (John 7 :38, R .Y .). I f you have quite definitely and simply placed the government on His shoulder, the Holy Spirit has come to you in His full ness. It is not that you have experienced any sensation; it is not that you are con scious of the incoming of the Holy Spirit; but, according to God’s own Word, the thing has happened, and you, who have had the Spirit in some little degree and measure if you are a child o f God at all, have so thrown open every avenue of your being to God that God Himself has come in. Again, let me urge upon you that you have not to beseech God to do what He wants to do. God is far more anxious that you should be filled with the Holy Spirit than you are to be filled. God is far more concerned with your development and use fulness than you can be about it yourself. God longs and waits, and delights in filling the hungry soul and satisfying it with His goodness.— J. R u ssell H ow d en . JANUARY 23 The Comfort of Assurance “Prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will o f God” (Rom. 12:2). It is important for a man to know that there is a God. It is more important for him to know that God is a Person. But it is most important o f all to know what kind of a Person He is. It will matter everything to you in the crises o f life, if you really know the kind of Person God is; if you can be absolutely certain that the law o f God is good, and that it is the ex pression o f the will o f God, who is abso lutely and entirely and completely good— that will mean everything to you . . . in sorrow or bereavement. And in that moment which will come to us all—unless the Lord comes first—when you lie down to die, it will matter then supremely that you know what kind of a God you have, that you can be sure that the will of God is a good will, and that He wants the good and the best for you, His creature and His child.—J. R u ssell H ow d en . JANUARY 24 Trench Warfare “ Grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word” (Acts 4:29).
