We have lived in our church life a kind of trench warfare; we have dug ourselves in; we have occasionally peeped over the para pet o f our denomination; we have occasion ally looked out over the top and wondered what was happening to the big world out side. But it has gone on without u s; it has not bothered very much about the church; it has not taken it very seriously, because, as the man in the street would say, it does not “cut any ice.” Today God is calling us . . . . to a new experience o f His love and power, that will compel the world to take notice. We have had our trench warfare; we have felt secure; and all the time the enemy has been digging his mine . . . The Holy Spirit is seeking to open our eyes . . that we may be thrown out into the open, in a bold, fearless witness for our Lord and Master.— W . W ilson C a s h . JANUARY 25 Sustained until Sunset " Take therefore no thought fo r the mor- row” (Matt. 6:34). God gives us life by days, little single days. Each day has its own duties, its own needs, its own trials and temptations, its own griefs and sorrows. God always gives us strength for the day as needed, with all that He puts into it. . . . No one was ever crushed by the burdens o f one day. W e can always get along with our heaviest load till the sun goes down; well, that is all we ever have to do. Tomorrow? Oh, you may have no tomorrow; you may be in heaven. If you are here, God will be here, too, and you will receive new strength sufficient for the new day. “ One day at a time—but a single day— Whatever its load, whatever its length; And there’s a bit of precious Scripture to say That according to each shall be our strength.” —J. R. M iller . JANUARY 26 God’s Controversy “And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the break ing o f the day” (Gen. 32:24). Notice that the living God came down in the form of a man, and wrestled with Jacob. And the same living God has come down to us, for the same purpose that He came to Jacob that night. It is not a ques tion o f pleading for a blessing. Some of us have been doing that. It is God plead ing with us and wrestling with us that we may do something whereby we may be blessed. God had a controversy with Jacob. And God has a controversy with you and with me. We know that our lives have not been surrendered. We know that we have lived for our own good pleasure, and that we have not given God the first place in our plans in all that we have done for Him. God wants us utterly for Himself, that He may make us what He would have us to be. God wanted Jacob for Himself, no more scheming, no more planning. And God wants you and me. All night long He wrestled with Jacob, and all night long, if need be, He will deal with us—till the breaking of the day^i-E. L . L an g sto n . JANUARY 27 Just As Able “ The Lord is good unto them that wait fo r him” (Lam. 3:25). Is God’s power not the same today? Is His love to His children not the same as it ever was? Is His willingness to help His children not as great as ever it was? Certainly it is. The blessed Book remains <
