In a newsletter a few years ago, I talked about Pearl Jam and their impact on me at an early age. They are one of my favorite grunge bands, but I also really enjoy Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and Soundgarden. These bands were all on the rise during the 1990s when I grew up. Throughout the 90s, the grunge scene stayed at the forefront of music and made “big hair” rock come to an end. The big hair bands of the 1980s had more of an aggressive feel and sound to their music. But grunge music had a different energy; it had real,
a few classes at my university, and mostly taught myself how to play through my love of music. Today, I still play the guitar often, and I really enjoy learning old and new songs. One of the first songs I learned on the guitar was “Machinehead” by Bush. I used to play it all the time in my dorm room in college. My roommate would cringe every time I played that song because it didn’t sound right. Now, we joke about it, and we share a laugh each time. After “Machinehead,”
raw emotions and depth within its music and lyrics. I think that’s why many people are drawn to this type of music even today — it’s something you can relate to. I still remember hearing Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time and thinking, “What is this?” To this day, I am still listening to these bands. Their music is so timeless. Another thing I love about grunge music is that you can’t place it
I began learning most of Pearl Jam’s discography. I love every song by them, and it’s a great feeling to have learned the music that I grew up listening to and still listen to even today. Music also plays a massive role in my family’s life. My wife and daughter play the piano, and my daughter is also learning to play the drums. We may have our own little band here soon! I

into a category. I remember debating with my friend whether grunge is classified as heavy metal or punk rock. We couldn’t come to an answer, and I think that’s the meaning of grunge. The sound didn’t fall into one genre — it seemed like the music got mixed into a blender and was influenced by multiple genres. Grunge music inspired me to want to learn how to play the guitar. As a kid, I took piano lessons and played the horn in my sixth-grade band, but these instruments never really grew on me. It wasn’t until college that I started playing the guitar. A friend of mine had one that he rarely touched so I asked if I could borrow it. From there, I started to play around with it, took
recently purchased my daughter an electric drum set, and I love playing along with her. It’s a great bonding experience, and it’s something I will never forget. This month, listen to the music that makes you happy. Music has several benefits that can boost your mood, make you feel like you’re not alone, and give you something to relate to. Music has brought so much joy to my life, and it continues to do so today.

Tips to Restore Harmony to the Dinner Table End Mealtime Power Struggles
When a child refuses to eat what’s in front of them, it’s frustrating for everyone involved. Over the years, parents have tried countless methods to deal with picky eaters, including punishment, cajoling, pleading, and compromising. They can all be exhausting with limited effect. So, what do experts recommend? First, you should consider whether your child is experiencing any discomfort eating. Children often don’t know how to express when something is causing them pain. They could be suffering from gastrointestinal problems and other issues like cavities. Difficulty chewing can also play a role. If you’ve ruled out medical concerns, you may suspect your picky eater is just jockeying for control — and you may be right, according to Dina Rose, author of “It’s Not About the Broccoli.” Small children control very little about their daily lives, but they can decide what to chew and swallow. And when parents react
negatively, children realize and take advantage of their power in the situation.
avoid making them special meals, which reinforces their picky eating habits. Try making food fun with bright colors and fun shapes, and ask your children for help preparing meals so they’ll have a stake in the final product. Finally, resist the urge to withhold dessert — it only reinforces the idea that sweet foods are tasty and vegetables are yucky.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the keys to resolving this conflict are routines and patience. Serve meals and snacks at regular times each day, and ensure snacks are not too close to dinnertime. Practice encouragement instead of punishment when your child rejects

MATT’S BOOK OF THE MONTH ‘Comes Again’ By Howard Stern
Howard Stern is an American radio and television personality, comedian, and author. He is primarily known for his radio show, “The Howard Stern Show,” which was nationally syndicated on radio stations from 1986 to 2005. Now, he broadcasts his show on Sirius XM. I started listening to Howard Stern when I was in college. I grew up in rural Illinois, and Stern’s show was not syndicated in our area at that time.
Stern has interviewed thousands of guests over the years from rock stars to rappers, comedians, actors and even politicians. They talk about a wide range of topics, and Stern has been asked which interviews are his favorite on several occasions. “Comes Again” answers this question with a series of interviews and conversations he’s had with his guests. Although this book shows the evolution of Stern and his interviewing capabilities, it also shows the evolution of pop culture over the past quarter century. Many people think of Stern as only a shock jock getting his staff to do outrageous stuff for “great radio.” What many people don’t realize is that when Stern went to Sirius Satellite Radio, he actually toned down his wackiness and started doing long-form interviews with guests. You can see the magic he has in getting celebrities to open up as much as possible. I especially enjoyed the interviews with comedians as I find that lifestyle interesting. But, perhaps the most intriguing is the series of interviews with former President Donald Trump before he became president in 2016. Just reading these interviews, no one would have expected he would have been the leader of the free world. Even if you are not a Stern fan, “Comes Again” is a fascinating, easy read that I definitely recommend. You will likely change your mind on who you think Stern is. Don’t get me wrong, he is still brash, obnoxious, and outrageous, but he truly is a master of his craft.
It wasn’t until the late ‘90s that I got a chance to hear the incredible Howard Stern and
his cast of characters. I also got a catchup lesson in “Sternology” when I saw his movie “Private Parts,” based on his bestselling book. Howard went on to write other books, including his latest, “Comes Again,” which is a collection of some of his favorite interviews with infamous guests.

Summer Skin Protection
It’s time for fun in the sun! Whether you’re heading out to the beach or lake, catching a ballgame, hosting a barbecue, or taking a boat tour, it’s important to protect your skin to avoid sun damage. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 Americans develops skin cancer by the time they are 70 years old, and every hour, two people die of skin cancer nationally. The risk of skin cancer is severe — it’s not just one sunburn. Having five or more sunburns in your lifetime can double your risk of developing skin cancer. Time for Safe Summer Fun 3 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN
Seek out the shade. No matter the activity, try to limit your exposure to the sun — you’ll be cooler, too! Look for trees, pavilions, and shelters. When these options aren’t available, create your own shade by wearing a hat and toting along an umbrella. Wear protective clothing. Whenever possible, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. UV protective clothing is best for maximum protection. Don’t forget about your eyes — UV sunglasses are important for your eyes and the delicate skin around them. Just because sunglasses appear dark does not mean they protect against UV rays! This summer, be sure to have fun but don’t forget to protect your skin from sunburns, possible skin cancer, and early signs of aging due to damage from sun exposure! Lather up!
Here are some surefire ways to avoid a pesky, painful, and potentially harmful sunburn.
Always check: Did you apply (and reapply) sunscreen? Apply sunscreen, and then reapply after going in the water or a few hours later. According to the National Cancer Institute, only about 30% of women and less than 15% of men regularly apply sunscreen, which leaves them vulnerable to the sun’s harmful UV rays. The National Cancer Institute recommends using an SPF of at least 15 and reminds everyone to remember their feet if they are exposed!
