The Retrospectrum Collection
August 2022 sees the second release of limited edition graphics from The Retrospectrum Collection by Bob Dylan. Retrospectrum explores the sheer breadth of Dylan’s achievement and his monumental impact on the world as a musician, poet and artist. Titled in celebration of the international tour of Dylan’s major museum retrospective of the same name, the collection has been greatly anticipated by Dylan collectors worldwide, since Retrospectrum first opened to the public at Modern Art Museum, Shanghai in 2019. The provenance of these artworks is exceptional, having formed part of an integral display within the exhibition. The Retrospectrum museum exhibition spans six decades of Dylan’s artistic career and features more than 300 paintings, sculptures and drawings. The curation united seven series of Dylan’s visual art, along with archival material and brand-new paintings. Following its opening in Shanghai, the exhibition then toured to the Today Art Museum in Beijing and the Jupiter Museum of Art in Shenzhen, before opening in Miami at the Frost Art Museum in November 2021, where it remained until April 2022.
graphics we see clear documentation of key thematic motifs, now synonymous with Dylan’s canon of work. When speaking about the scenes he is often drawn to, Dylan commented: “I chose images because of the meanings they have for me and patterns can be seen in the repeating images – roads, shacks, piers, automobiles, streets, bayous, railroad tracks, bridges, motels, truck stops, power lines, farm yards, theater marquees, churches, signs and symbols, etc. – all establishing a certain type of compositional value. I would say the purpose is plain, non-experimental or exploratory.” The works conjure a feeling of transience, a journey from the metropolis to the natural world via road, bridge and rail. Together they present a panoramic vision of the American landscape from Dylan’s particular perspective. Dylan’s artwork invites the viewer to participate in a trip from city to country, night time to daytime, around the clock and the calendar. Through music, words and art, Dylan remains restlessly creative, going down the road with his eyes wide open. As he sang in 1965, ‘he not busy being born is busy dying.’ This collection represents a visual pathway following Dylan’s artistic journey, whose ever-evolving artistry continues to position him as inarguably one of the most revered living visual artists on a global stage.
