Pentathletes make their mark ROCKLAND | Two youth athletes are making the grade in a big way in a gruel- ling Olympic sport and may one day be representing Canada in the Games. Mathea Stevens and Garnett Steven took top-"ve placings in their respective divi- sions at nationals in pentathlon in Guelph over the August long weekend.

selected the modern pentathlon and its events to mirror the ancient Greek-style of pentathlon, which included running, jav- elin, discus, long jump, and wrestling. The modern version of the pentathlon re- $ected the various skills and attributes re- quired of a Napoleonic-era military o#cer. Included are running and swimming, for overall "tness; marksmanship with a pistol, for control and concentration; fencing, for agility and speed; equestrianship, including general riding and obstacle jumping, using an unfamiliar horse, to display determina- tion, adaptability, and courage. The modern pentathlon is the sole Olym- pic sport which has the International Olym- pic Committee (IOC) as its governing body. The "ve sports are combined into four sepa- rate events, all of which are completed dur- ing a single day. Pentathlon, and its more well-known athletic cousin, the decathlon, is one of the more gruelling sports in the world. ROCKLAND | It is proving a golden season on the soccer !eld for Rockland United’s U15 girls. Over the August 9 weekend the RUSC U15 squad slammed the competition at the Gloucester Invitational Soccer Tournament, hammering teams for Brantford and the Montréal areas to claim the gold. The U15 girls also earned the RUSC Most Improved Team Award during an Aug. 20 presentation event at Cheney Park. As of Monday, Aug. 25 the U15 squad holds a 10-1-1 game record for the season with two more matches still to play before

the "nish. Their sole loss of the season is to Kemptville with the opposing team edging out a narrow 2-1 win against Rockland. Coach Larry Van Every predicts that the U15 girls will "nish in the top three ran- kings, with at least a hold on second-place in the "nal standings review depending on how their remaining two games play out. He noted that the core group of veterans on the team played their 2012 season wit- hout any wins and over the following two seasons have raced up the standings ladder to place third overall last season and now making a play for the top "nish this season.
