Abstract: This book documents the life of Abdallah Azzam and examines his position in “global Jihadism” and his responsibility for its course after his passing. The author, Thomas Hegghammer, succeeds to a great degree in the first mission. The second, however, in which he links closely links Azzam in analysis to the Jihadists after him, contains great gaps due to the lack of sources and evidence. The book review focuses on explaining Azzam’s Jihadism for its importance and connection to its succeeding counterparts. It also draws attention to the importance of contexts that were not given their due in the book, especially the geopolitical context of the Afghan crisis and the context of the emergence of jihadism, which is deeper and beyond Azzam himself.
