THE DEFENSE REPORT

JULY 2023

FEMALE SHARKS HAVE THICKER SKIN. Speaking of shark skin, females have thicker skin than males. When sharks mate, the males actually bite the skin of the females to get in the proper position. Also, the genitalia of males has sharp spurs to help hold them in place until mating is complete. To help this not be an uncomfortable experience for females, they have adapted and evolved to have thicker skin! HAMMERHEAD SHARKS HAVE 360-DEGREE VISION. Have you ever wondered what is up with hammerhead sharks’ funny- looking heads? Studies have shown that hammerhead sharks, which have uniquely shaped heads and eyes that are tilted forward, have 360-degree vision, also known as binocular vision, allowing them to see completely around them in all directions. Hammerhead sharks rely on this vision to hunt. THEY HAVE A SIXTH SENSE. Sharks can sense electric signals with their electrosense. They have tiny electroreceptors located all over the surface of their heads to hone in on their prey and detect electrical currents in the water. They can even tap into the earth’s magnetic field to navigate their way through the deep and dark oceans.

FIVE FIN-TASTIC FACTS ABOUT THE OCEAN’S APEX PREDATOR IT’S SHARK WEEK! On July 17, 1987, Discovery Channel aired its first-ever Shark Week! It was a week-long documentary all about sharks, and it gained so much attention and traction that every year since, Shark Week has returned. It’s so popular that studies have shown more than 30 million viewers tune in each year to watch these apex predators explore the deep blue seas. Some people even gather for “Shark Week parties”! In honor of Shark Week and to prepare for this year’s debut on July 11, let’s check out some totally “jaw-some” fun facts and trivia about sharks! You’ll be prepared to impress your friends or coworkers the next time Shark Week comes up in conversation. SHARKS ARE BONELESS FISH. While adult humans have 206 bones, sharks have zero! Sharks, just like rays, are a type of fish known as elasmobranchs, which means fish made up of cartilaginous tissues, or cartilage, just like the cartilage in your ears. But even though they lack bones, they are still able to fossilize! Because their skeletal system is composed of cartilage, they are lighter and, therefore, very buoyant in the water.

Happy Shark Week!

THEY FEEL LIKE SANDPAPER. Let’s say, hypothetically, that you were to pet a shark. Due to the placoid scales on their

skin, they feel rough and scratchy, just like sandpaper. These scales, however, do serve a purpose! They are all pointed toward the sharks’ tails and help to streamline their movements in the water by reducing friction. However, if you ever do encounter a shark, I strongly recommend that you don’t reach out for a quick pet.

TELL A STORY AND GAIN A FOLLOWING BUILD LOYALTY WITH STORYTELLING MARKETING We all love stories. Be it books, movies, or current events, we can’t help but thrive on storytelling in our everyday lives. We even process information better when it’s told as a narrative. A study by psychologist Jerome Bruner discovered that people were 22 times more likely to remember a fact when embedded in a story. That makes storytelling a powerful tool to reach your audience. Storytelling marketing is when brands use a narrative to convey their message. In our era, consumers require more than a basic display of your product. Consumers are searching for why they should trust — and buy from — you. The best way to do this is to utilize storytelling marketing. Not only will it help customers better understand your business, but it also humanizes your company. HOW CAN STORYTELLING BENEFIT YOU? Businesses worldwide have been reaping the benefits of storytelling, and it has worked well enough to become the new standard. Whether you’re sharing why you started your business or adapting stories that align with your company’s beliefs, storytelling marketing can:

• • • •

Make your brand memorable

Separate your business from competitors

Share your message and ideas

Build a connection with potential customers

GET STARTED ON STORYTELLING MARKETING. While the benefits of storytelling marketing are clear, it’s a bit more challenging to execute. You might struggle with your story and what you should share. Consider what motivated you to start your business. Entrepreneurship isn’t for the faint of heart, and there must be various reasons for this endeavor’s importance to you. List all the events and ideas that led you here. Next, design your anecdotal story to align with the ideals of your desired audience. Instead of sharing your story, you could create a tale with powerful metaphors and a lively narrative to draw in your audience. Whatever approach you take, storytelling marketing will ensure you leave a greater impression.

ONE POINT, TWO POINTS …

DRIVING INFRACTION POINTS ADD UP AND CAN LEAD TO LICENSE SUSPENSIONS

It should be noted that Georgia recognizes points collected from infractions in other U.S. states and will count on your driving record. If you are facing driving infractions or are at risk of having your license suspended or revoked, give us a call today! Our experienced team of professionals is ready to step in and help! When it comes to driving, the most important thing is safety. That’s why it’s important to keep in mind that driving is a privilege, not a right! That privilege can be easily revoked if you are not practicing proper safety procedures while behind the wheel in Georgia. That’s where the state’s driving point system comes into play — it helps to weed out dangerous and careless drivers. When you’re behind the wheel, you are expected to obey all rules of the road, and if you neglect a law, you commit a traffic infraction. If this infraction is observed by Georgia police officers, instead of going to jail, you will receive fines and points on your license and public driving record. Because driving records are open to the public, points can cause an increase in your auto insurance payments and may even impact an employer’s decision to hire you.

If you rack up enough points on your driving record, your license can be suspended for up to six months or revoked. Some common driving violations that lead to points tacked onto your license and driving record include but are not limited to:

• • • • • • • •

Driving at night without your headlights activated

Texting and driving

Failure to secure a load

Speeding

Unlawful passing of a school bus

Recklessly driving Improper passing

Driving with an open container

LAUGH IT OFF

With summer in the air and the Fourth of July in full swing this month, boating on the lake is a popular way to spend the afternoon in Georgia. While you’re out on the boat having a great time, the last thing you want is to wind up with a boating under the influence (BUI) charge. That’s why it’s imperative you understand Georgia’s BUI laws and take the necessary steps to avoid a BUI charge. In the state of Georgia, law enforcement doesn’t need any reason to stop a boat or vessel traveling on a public waterway, and boat safety checks are permitted and common. If, during one of these checks, a police officer observes any signs of alcohol impairment or drug use, you may be detained for further investigation. According to section 52-7-12 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (OCGA), it is illegal for anyone to be in actual physical control of, operate, manipulate, navigate, or steer a moving vessel, aquaplane, surfboard, or water skis if: • You have a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.10 or higher. • You are under the influence of alcohol, and it is not safe to be in control of the device or vessel. • You are under the influence of drugs, and it is not safe to be in control of the device or vessel. • You have any amount of marijuana or another form of a controlled substance found in your system. The penalties for BUIs vary and depend on the number of offenses. If you or a loved one has been charged with a BUI or a DUI in Georgia, we are here to help. Our attorneys have the expertise and experience to handle your case for the best possible outcome. Give us a call today to set up a free consultation. CHARGED WITH A BUI? DISCOVER YOUR IDEAL SEASIDE RETREAT

FIND THE PERFECT BEACH RENTAL

One of the most important decisions anyone will make regarding their vacation is where they stay. This is especially true for summer vacations at the beach. Everyone has a different idea of their ideal vacation, and where you stay can make or break the trip.

Here are a few things to consider before booking a beach rental for your vacation.

(but less expensive) still acceptable? You’ll also need to examine the surrounding area to ensure it has everything you need. If you don’t want to drive much once you settle in, choose a rental within walking distance of the beach, shops, and restaurants. THE EXTRAS You should consider a couple of other things when booking a beach rental. If you plan to bring your pets, ensure the rental you book is pet- friendly. It’s also worth investigating if the beach itself is dog-friendly, as bringing your furry friend to the beach can make the vacation even more enjoyable. Many rentals also provide beach toys, body boards, and more so you don’t have to spend money buying or renting them at shops. Read through the rental description, and don’t hesitate to ask the owner any questions.

SIZE MATTERS How many people are coming on your trip? Is it just you and your significant other, or are children coming? You will want to pick a rental to fit your family’s needs. If your traveling party is small, a condo or apartment overlooking the beach will likely work. If your family is large or you’re worried about the kids being too loud, consider a single- family beach house instead. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION You probably already know what beach to visit, but choosing a specific unit can be challenging. Is a rental with a grand view of the beach and the ocean worth the cost, or is one without quite the view
