I AM A CRITIC

A critic am I, I go to church, I sit in the center pew. M y cynical eye it scans the crowd. The faultless are but few; While there I sit, my piercing eye Escapes not a single fault,

I pick one here, I pick one there. These faults I then exalt.

A critic am I, my bloody hand Will wound a man to the heart And tear from his side his dearest friend, And sever them far apart; A deadly foe, my unruly tongue, Doth poison the minds of men, It wounds to kill, and to the heart Does many a dagger send. A critic am I, I spare them not. No difference between them make. Though godly the men, my fiery tongue Doth bum them at the stake; No care have I, a tender heart Is a thing of the distant past, The stones of censure and ridicule, With merciless hand I cast. A critic am I, little good in man My vision can e'er behold, But with a skillful hand the cynic's ban I hurl with courage bold; And as I pass, the highway I .strew With the carcass of many a man, I strip him of all the lovely and good, And leave him for the travellers to scan. A 'critic am I, the judgment seat Is the throne whereon I sit. No wisdom with mine can quite com pare, There's none to equal it; Just how the church will e'er move on, When death doth lead me horqe, If oft a query in my mind, They'll miss me when I'm gone. * If our circumstances find us in God/ then we'll find God in our circumstances. * *

DEFINITION OF FALSE DOCTRINE

Peter warns of the coming day when false teachers, who deny the cardinal doctrines of God’s Word, w ill become more bold and widespread. In no un certain terms the watchword is, they shall come in bringing “damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them and, thereby, bring upon themselves sw ift destruction.” A Sun day school teacher asked her pupils if any of them knew what false doc trine meant. A ll was silent, until one little boy volunteered b r i g h t l y , “Wouldn’t that be when a doctor gives somebody the wrong medicine? It’s when they get worse sick, instead of better.” When you stop to think of his answer, the young lad wasn’t too far off. False doctrine is actually giving sick souls erroneous teaching. This not only makes them worse but also, if continued, w ill result in eternal death and separation from God. If a physi cian were to give his patient the wrong medicine regularly he would soon lose his practice and no doubt would be barred from the profession. Would that it were possible to bar all the teachers of false doctrine from occupy ing places of spiritual leadership. Paul wrote to the Galatian church, “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which, we have preached unto you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8).
