Youth Enterprise Policy Analysis Report

2.2. FIELD SURVEY

This section presents findings from field interviews. Field survey results are intended to complement findings from the desk review and ultimately guide PSSA and its partners in the design and implementation of activities related to policy implementation and enforcement within its zone of influence and beyond. Findings will also provide a framework for PSSA and its partners to develop and provide meaningful and impactful interventions to strengthen the business-enabling environment and improve access to services and markets for Tanzanian enterprises, especially those that are youth-led. The team conducted a field survey in five regions from Tanzania mainland (Iringa, Morogoro, Mbeya, Dar es Salaam, and Dodoma) and two from Zanzibar (Unguja and Pemba) and collected data from 112 respondents. The team used systematic random sampling to balance respondents by size of the business (micro, small and medium) and gender (male and female ownership). On average, each business category (i.e., micro-, small, and medium sized enterprise) made up one-third of the total number of youth businesses visited, including those at startup stages (47.1 percent of total respondents; with an average of 3 years of operation). An average of 64.1 percent of registered respondents operated as sole proprietors. All respondents were youth agribusiness enterprises. [68]
