Big liability At the same session, the board received a report from the business department cau- tioning that a sum of $4.5 million would have to be set aside in 2013-2014 to start building a fund for future liabilities. The re- port related that over the next nine years, the UCDSB would need to accumulate $18 million to pay future benefits. Future liabili- ties include $36.9 million in retirement gra-
tuities. This money would be drawn from funds normally used to finance classroom activities. Changes introduced by the Min- istry of Education regarding budget com- pliance have caused this issue for the board. The board will lobby “forcefully” to “high- light the ability of the board to be compli- ant in the future retirement gratuity amor- tization schedule without detracting from funds for student needs.” Messaging system The board received an update on the in- formation technology department’s proj- ect to introduce a more effective parent messaging system.
