But now everything seemed against them. The troubled sea, the stormy wind, the darkness of the night, the difficulty in rowing, and the Lord’s absence made their position one of perplexity and distress. But where is the Lord all this time, and whither has He gone ? Has He ceased to care for His disciples or is He not aware of their distress? He has gone to the place of power, and that power He is using on their behalf. From the moun tain, whither He had gone to pray, His all-seeing eye is following them unwear- iedly. Not a single wave has touched the vessel without His measuring hand, and not a breath of wind that He has not sent forth from its chambers. He is at the helm, we may say, of the winds, the waves, and the vessel. ■His hand lays hold on everything; He rules over all. Never was He more near to His people, or they more dear to Him, than when tbey were passing through the storm, apparently alone.-— Things New and Old. Let me no more my comfort draw From my frail hold of Thee; In this alone rejoice with awe, Thy mighty grasp, of me. — J. C. Shairp. —o-—. February 8— “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief’’ (Mk. 9:24). Those of you who have seen the “Trans figuration” of Raphael were doubtless struck with what seemed to be a mistake on the part of the artist. Christ, with the apostles, is on the mount, and at^ the same time a group of bewildered disci ples, with the distressed father and the maniac son, are at the foot of the moun tain. The two scenes were about twenty- four hours apart, and the distance was too great to see from one to the other ; and yet Raphael has expressed his thought. He wished to place in contrast the glory of the transfiguration and that scene of suffering, bewilderment, and unbelief. Our Mounts of Transfiguration are close to our Gethsemanes. Often the time of vic tory is near the time of defeat. Weak faith, struggling out into victory, is the thought of the text and context . . . . Little faith is just strong enough to pray, “Help mine unbelief.” Thank God when you have faith enough to pray for faith. It is not of the heroic kind; it is not the kind that attracts the atten tion of angels and causes men to wonder, as Christ wondered at the faith of the cen turion ; but if you have faith enough to pray for faith, it is encouraging. —A. C. Dixon. I — o — February 9— “And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him” (Gen. 5:24). I, too, need first the vision of Thyself, 0 Lord! I would not taste of death until 1 have seen Thee! . . . Not to seek Thee in heaven would I come; come and seek me on earth. I would be translated be fore death. I would taste Thy grapes in my desert. Thy life is not beyond the grave ; it is here ; it is now. I can reach it without dying; I can breathe it without expiring. I need not the wings of a dove to find it; I require not the angél’s flight to lead me to its rest. I have heard men say, “Death is the gâté of Life.” Nay, Thou art the gate, and death is the shady avenue. Not on the other side would L
