Big News: I’m a Dad! Meet Our Perfect Baby Boy
I can hardly believe it: For the first time ever, I’m going to celebrate Father’s Day not only as a son, but as a dad. On March 25, Lucero delivered our beautiful baby boy! We named him Quentin Guadalupe Dahl after my great-grandfather Quentin, and Guadalupe, which is Lucero’s middle name. Every time I hold him, I can still hardly believe he’s here. If you’re a parent, you get it … there are no words to describe what this pride, amazement, and love feels like! Lucero and I couldn’t have asked for a better birth experience than the one we had at Mercy Hospital of Folsom
the hospital staff took great care of us when we showed up ahead of schedule and did everything possible to make her comfortable. She was a rock star through it all. Honestly, she was way more relaxed than I was! I’m not easily stressed, but I was so worried about Quentin being breech that I felt like I was going to pass out on the way to the hospital. Lucero just laughed at me from the passenger seat. Apparently, I was driving hunched over the steering wheel with my eyes glued to the road (imagine that!).

Lucero and I looked at each other in awe. Time stood still for a moment. I remember it like it was yesterday. I felt so much love that my baby had entered this world. Then, we heard the most beautiful sound — Quentin started crying, and on cue, we burst into tears too! Within five minutes, Quentin was on Lucero’s chest and we got our first look at his perfect face (he has his mom’s nose), red-tinted hair, and gray eyes. He was so alert and was looking right up at his mommy and daddy. Truly, I don’t have the words to describe how I felt at that moment. Before the birth, I tried to envision what it would feel like, but there’s no way I could have imagined that amazing, life-changing, incredible experience with my wife. I hope we can raise Quentin to be a compassionate, kind, driven person who goes after his dreams and knows he’s fully loved.

What’s a business tax deduction? If a potential $10,000 business tax deduction ever catches your eye, it should, but it might not be worth as much as you think. A business tax deduction will reduce a company’s taxable income. This means that if your business is in a 20% tax bracket, a $10,000 deduction would only be worth $2,000 in reduced taxes. That’s still a noticeable amount of money! But while deductions can add up, it’s important to know that the raw number isn’t your total savings. It only affects your taxable income numbers. What’s a business tax credit? Used sparingly by governments, tax credits can be very powerful incentives. A business tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction to your tax bill. There are numerous business tax credits in the United States, and you can often pick up their intended purpose by the title. For example, the Indian Employment Credit will give tax credits to employers who hire Native Americans. There are even business tax credits for specific industries and sectors, like the Biofuel Producer Credit. Some tax credits are refundable, which means that if your tax credit value exceeds your tax liability, you can get a refund check. However, some tax credits are nonrefundable, which means your $5,000 tax credit on a $4,000 tax bill will not result in a $1,000 refund check. The IRS has a list of forms and credits on their website, but it’s often best to consult with a local tax expert (such as our own Tyler Q. Dahl!). Why do credits and deductions matter? As a business owner, you’re in the business of making money, so it’s useful to know all of the resources you have available to save money on your regular tax expenses. With the right knowledge of your industry, tax incentives, and tax planning, you might be able to save more money than you have ever before — increasing your profit margins significantly. For the Marinade • 1 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp soy sauce • 2 tbsp chili garlic sauce • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
1. In a bowl, whisk together marinade ingredients. 2. In a reusable freezer bag, combine cubed chicken and all but 1/4 cup of the marinade. 3. Seal bag and massage marinade into the chicken. Chill in the fridge overnight. 4. The following day, preheat the grill to 400 F. Thread chicken and pineapple onto skewers, adding two cubes of chicken for each cube of pineapple. 5. Grill the skewers for 3–4 minutes per side, brushing with the reserved marinade in the final minutes. 6. Serve over rice or with your favorite barbecue sides!
