2018 Crop UK Export Quality

Malting Barley Availability

Overall, UK malting barley is slightly higher in nitrogen than recent years. Our export surplus is estimated as 320,000 MT compared to a potential 550,000 MT from Hectares sown. To achieve this volume some utilisation of higher Nitrogen Barley will be required. Both quality and yield were best in the South of England where most export activity will be concentrated. UK cargos will be lower in moisture with typically sub 14% average. Germinative energy characteristics are outstanding and retention levels are also well above specification.

Supply and demand 2018:

- 3.7 million MT of spring barley produced nationally in 2018 with 327,000 MT available for export - Plantings up 4% from 2017 with 740,000 Hectares of spring barley planted nationally

- Approximate yield of 5 MT/Ha, 16% lower than 2016

- 50% of barley produced meeting malting criteria

- 1.5 million MT of UK demand

- 320,000 MT surplus available for export
