The Mystery Hull
Mike dray is in possession of a solo but with no number engraved in the hog or fixed to transom, it’s age and builder are hard to ascertain. The hull shell which is in remarkably good condition looks too robust to be grp so that would indicate it is an frp build. Omega did dabble in frp in the eighties but this looks newer so we would assume there it is a don marine. The slightly bevelled edges to the deck to side tank join would have been a big marketing feature as would have been the striking colour scheme.
There are some more clues that this is an early frp build, the transom port is relatively small and those transom gudgeons are pretty dodgy looking, certainly not seasure. The gunwale profile looks quite narrow in its depth and the transom itself looks relatively thick, modern FRP builds have wider gunwales to maximise leverage and minimum weight at the ends. The hull is in great condition and you could argue that Barry and Glynn were just ten years too soon with the frp build that would find favour with the class from 2000 onwards. It would be interesting to know where the bulkhead sits and how much rake can be achieved, my guess is that it is at 3050 so some fettling to be done mike!
