It is with great sadness we have to announce the passing of one of our former Class Presidents, Gordon Walls. Gordon served on the Committee in various roles before taking the big seat from Winston Knight in 1982, relinquishing it to Craig Moffett in 1984. The Class was in quite a dire situation with boats sales dropping off and some dissension amongst the ranks so it was a breath of fresh air to have this man leading the way forward. I remember Gordon with warmth, a gentleman on the water, cheerful and yet fully focussed while off the water he had the sort of presence which was commanding without any nonsense. Gordon had a team of equally race minded individuals to call on and a stoic Chief Measurer in Frank Mountfield. Gordon was one of the pioneers of the Omega foam sandwich Solo, racing 3340 in an era which was still full of Lovett builds. His overall finish at the 1984 Nationals at Brixham did not reflect his skill but a 5th in race 2 must have felt good. Gordon was a proud father and had every right to be one as his son Ewan has produced some great wins in the design they both love while himself remaining a gentleman on and off the water, the best possible reflection on his dad.
