Message from the President: Family, Friends and Fellow Members,

On behalf of the members of the NYPD Saint Paul's Society, I would like to welcome you all to our Annual Scholarship Dinner Dance. Tonight, is a very special night for our Society. We hope that you enjoy this joyous occasion which will be filled with great dancing, great music, and of course, great people. The NYPD Saint Paul's Society was formed in 1958, when the founders of our order recognized the need for an organization that could help bring officers of Greek origin and the Orthodox faith together. Since then, our Society has continued to grow. Today, we not only have Police Officers in our ranks, but also Detectives, Sergeants, Lieutenants, Captains, and Inspectors. It is a true testament to how we have grown as a Society and as Greek Americans serving in the best police department in the world. Tonight we are very proud to honor Inspector Anthony Gazis, Commanding Officer of the NYPD Medical Division. Serving in many different units within the Housing Police and NYPD during his 30 years of service, his biggest challenge was facing a worldwide pandemic. With no experience or history to learn from, Inspector Gazis pushed forward and did everything in his power to keep the men and women of the NYPD healthy and safe - allowing them to fulfill their mission in protecting the citizens of New York City. This task earns him the title of Man of the Year. This evening, will we also be posthumously honoring Detective Anastasios Tsakos. As we all know we lost a true friend and protector a little over a year ago. This evening, to eternally honor his memory, we will be creating the Detective Anastasios Tsakos Service Scholarship Award, which will be presented to a student who personifies both Detective Tsakos’ Greek pride and his commitment and dedication to service. In closing, I would like to thank the board, the membership, and all those who donated their time to make this night an absolute success. I would also like to thank those who contributed to our scholarship fund. Your generous donations help our children in their pursuit of academic success. Congratulations to all our scholarship recipients. We wish you continued success and good luck in your future endeavors. Fraternally, Nicholas Biancoviso, President, NYPD Saint Paul's Society

Man Of The Year Inspector Anthony Gazis

Anthony Stellios Gazis is a Greek-American NYPD Inspector and presently the Commanding Officer of the NYPD Medical Division. Inspector Gazis was born in 1968 in Manhattan NY, to a Greek-American family. He is the younger of two children. His father, an immigrant from Corfu, Greece worked as a banker and his mother, from Katerini, Greece was a homemaker. He was raised in Astoria, NY and attended Long Island City High School; graduating with honors and elected the 1986 Class President. He attended City College of NY, New York City College of Technology and Marist College. He has an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, a Bachelor of Technology Degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering, and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and Government. Inspector Gazis is married to Julie, a retired NYPD Lieutenant, and fellow Academy classmate. They have three children, Anthony Jr., Christopher and Ashley. His oldest son, Anthony Jr., is an NYPD Detective. Inspector Gazis first began his service to the City of New York as an NYPD Police Cadet in 1990. He was sworn into the New York City Housing Authority Police in April of 1991 and was assigned to Police Service Area #3 in Brooklyn. While there, he was assigned to midnight patrol, the Community Sweep Team and later, the Anti- Crime Unit. He was awarded three (3) Meritorious Police Duty and six (6) Excellent Police Duty medals. In 1995, the New York City Housing Authority Police merged with the NYPD. In August 1997 he was assigned to Brooklyn North Narcotics as an investigator and in February 1998, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assigned to the 110 Precinct in Patrol Borough Queens North. In June 1999, he was transferred to MISD, now known as the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD). In April of 2001 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and remained assigned to MISD where he was designated Lieutenant Special Assignment in 2006. In August 2011 he was promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned as the Executive Officer of the 109 Precinct in Queens North. Shortly thereafter he was assigned to the Internal Affairs Bureau and designated the Commanding Officer of Group 7. Subsequently, he was designated as the Commanding Officer of the Office of Professional Development. In April 2014, he was transferred and named the Commanding Officer of the Information Technology Services Division where he helped implement and advance many of the Departments’ technological systems and applications that assist our members every day. In August 2015 he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector. Deputy Inspector Gazis was transferred to Patrol Borough Queens North in March of 2017 where he served as Special Projects coordinator and then Borough Adjutant. On March 9, 2020, Inspector Gazis became the Commanding Officer of the NYPD’s Medical Division. Unbeknownst to anyone, New York City would soon become the epicenter of an unprecedented and global virus - Coronavirus. This worldwide pandemic posed one the most challenging and significant moments for this Department. The Department faced record numbers of sickness, absences and most unfortunately, deaths. Inspector Gazis and the entire Medical Division team worked tirelessly to provide support and care to all of our members. They were instrumental in obtaining and providing vaccines for all active members of the Department, retirees and all of their families as well. They were also able to assist in providing vaccines for residents of New York City Housing Developments throughout the City of New York. On April 30, 2020, he was promoted to the rank of Inspector. Since then, and under Inspector Gazis’ steadfast leadership, the Medical Division has been awarded Unit Citations for two consecutive years in recognition of their extraordinary and indefatigable hard work. Inspector Gazis’ priority is that all members are provided with the greatest level of care and respect during times of illness, injury or need.

Detective Anastasios Tsakos In Memorium

In Memorium Detective Anastasios Tsakos On April 27, 2021, Police Officer Anastasios Tsakos was struck and killed by a vehicle being operated by an intoxicated driver. His tragic and untimely loss has been felt in the hearts of many. Police Officer Tsakos was diverting cars off the highway after a previous fatal crash on the Long Island Expressway, when he was fatally struck as he stood next to his patrol vehicle.

Police Officer Tsakos was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver fled the scene in her vehicle but was later apprehended. An investigation revealed that the driver was intoxicated and driving with a suspended driver’s license. She faces multiple charges including vehicular manslaughter, reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of a deadly accident and driving while intoxicated. Police Officer Tsakos honorably served in the New York City Police Department for fourteen (14) years and was assigned to Highway Unit 3. Police Officer Tsakos was posthumously promoted to the rank of Detective 1st Grade. His loving wife Irene, his 7-year-old daughter Eugenia and his 4-year-old son Stavros survive him.

Detective Tsakos will forever be remembered as a hero, a dedicated and devoted family man, and a proud Greek-American.

To eternally honor his memory, we believe it is fitting that from this day forward, a new scholarship will be awarded in his name and will be presented to a student who personifies Detective Tsakos’ Greek pride as well as his dedication and commitment to service.
