ST. PAUL'S SCHOLARSHIP JOURNAL 2022

In Memorium Detective Anastasios Tsakos On April 27, 2021, Police Officer Anastasios Tsakos was struck and killed by a vehicle being operated by an intoxicated driver. His tragic and untimely loss has been felt in the hearts of many. Police Officer Tsakos was diverting cars off the highway after a previous fatal crash on the Long Island Expressway, when he was fatally struck as he stood next to his patrol vehicle.

Police Officer Tsakos was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver fled the scene in her vehicle but was later apprehended. An investigation revealed that the driver was intoxicated and driving with a suspended driver’s license. She faces multiple charges including vehicular manslaughter, reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of a deadly accident and driving while intoxicated. Police Officer Tsakos honorably served in the New York City Police Department for fourteen (14) years and was assigned to Highway Unit 3. Police Officer Tsakos was posthumously promoted to the rank of Detective 1st Grade. His loving wife Irene, his 7-year-old daughter Eugenia and his 4-year-old son Stavros survive him.

Detective Tsakos will forever be remembered as a hero, a dedicated and devoted family man, and a proud Greek-American.

To eternally honor his memory, we believe it is fitting that from this day forward, a new scholarship will be awarded in his name and will be presented to a student who personifies Detective Tsakos’ Greek pride as well as his dedication and commitment to service.
