AUGUST 2024

Enjoy Family Traditions and Fall Yard Prep With Anthony’s Lawn Care FROM WATER SLIDES TO WEED PULLING

When August comes around, my mind immediately goes to weed pulling, lawn maintenance, and giant water slides. This is a busy month for us here at Anthony’s Lawn Care as we help prepare people’s yards for a new season. It’s also the time of year my family takes its inaugural trip to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari in Santa Claus. This vacation to our favorite amusement and water park is one of my best-loved activities before school starts, and it’s just guaranteed to be good quality time with my family.

of maintenance and prep work for clients as we gear up for the next few months. You can do other great gardening activities with your family this season, too — like setting up a rain gauge to play meteorologist when it rains or starting a late veggie garden with plants like radishes and lettuce, which can still take root at this point.

Our family here at Anthony’s is preparing for another round of busier maintenance after the slight lull we see in spring. As we move into fall and winter, this is the

They can fall and damage your property or even a family member. August is also a pivotal time for pruning shrubs and other plants so they continue to look neat, even as they lose some of their volume when they go dormant. start to fall, this is a good reminder for all of us to take time for those little moments of joy with our loved ones, regardless of how busy life may be getting.

As I said, my family and I always go to Holiday World this time of year. My wife and I have been going pretty consistently since about 2011, and it’s a family tradition that will continue for many years. What I love about the park is it has massive water slides and

Our little one still can’t get on some of those big rides, but my 8-year-old loves hopping aboard as many rides as he can. In our family, fun always extends into the yard. Fall brings to mind the joys of raking up big piles of orange leaves. Clearing a lawn and seeing these giant mounds of color is something so simple and rewarding. Exploring the Farmers Market

Don’t Leaf It to Chance

TELLTALE SIGNS YOUR TREE NEEDS PRUNING OR REMOVAL

This time of year, we harvest fruits and vegetables in abundance, and farmers markets across the country are brimming with locally grown goods. Taking advantage of these wonderful events where local farmers and artisans sell the fruits of their labor is a great way to support local small businesses and explore all your area has to offer. Moreover, it is a perfect opportunity to share some wholesome fun with your family, as there are activities and attractions at farmers markets suitable for all ages. LEARNING FIRSTHAND Your local farmers are a treasure trove of agricultural know-how. Many farmers will happily talk with you or your children about their favorite crop, what’s in season, and their recommendations for recipes that incorporate their produce. It’s a great way to grow your kids’ social skills and get them interested in gardening and farming. SCAVENGING FOR SAMPLES There is no shortage of variety regarding the fruits and vegetables offered at farmers markets. Engaging your family in a scavenger hunt to discover various produce among the local farmers’ stands is a great way to broaden their minds and keep them entertained. Plenty of farmers will offer you and your kids samples of their wares, allowing you to try before you buy. HOMEWARD BOUND After enjoying the farmers market, you may want to take what you learned home. Starting a small garden and growing starter plants with your kids is a great way to bond and create lasting memories. Growing and caring for plants and vegetables is a wonderful experience for children and helps them connect more with nature. Do yourself and your family a favor: Explore the farmers market and discover the flavor of your local area. ENJOYABLE ACTIVITIES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

A tree can be a beautiful addition to your yard, providing shade, limbs the family can enjoy climbing on for years, and delicious fruit. They literally produce the air we need to breathe. As beneficial as these long-living giants can be, dead or damaged trees can be hazardous. From broken branches in need of trimming to diseases that require a total removal, let’s leaf through the telltale signs that it’s time to give your tree some TLC. SIGNS IT’S TIME TO PRUNE Regular pruning ensures trees stay healthy, maintain their shape, and grow strong. The best time of year for routine pruning is spring or winter to promote new growth. Along with making pruning a habit a couple of times a year, there are other reasons it may be time to trim. If branches are broken, bowed, or splintered, you should remove them. Large dead branches can be hazardous if they fall. You should also trim uneven growth, damage from storms, areas where branches are crisscrossing, or parts of the tree with too much outward growth. SIGNS IT’S TIME TO REMOVE Sometimes, there’s no other choice but to remove a tree completely, which can be dangerous, so you should work with a professional if it’s time to bid farewell to your favorite oak. Look for signs of decay or disease, like visible wounds, vertical cracks in the trunk, or severe damage. Sometimes, a big hole in the trunk can signify that your tree is hollow and may have internal decay. Dead branches can also mean your tree is decaying or has an underlying issue. Alive branches are flexible and will have new growth, like leaves. A dead tree can’t be brought back to life, so if no new growth is coming off the trunk and it is leaning significantly, it may mean it’s time to remove it. If you notice signs that your tree may need care, contact us at Anthony’s Lawn Care. We are experts in tree removal and pruning and can determine the best course of action for your yard. So, whether your pear tree needs pruning or your maple is ready to retire, we have the equipment and know-how to take care of it safely.

Remove any leaves and debris so you get proper drainage. Clogged gutters can cause you significant problems in the coming winter months like ice dams. SPRUCE UP EVERYTHING. Wash dirt from your sidewalks, driveway, and siding to increase curb appeal. Sweep up your porch or entryway and give the area a fresh coat of paint if it looks dull. As trees and plants in your yard lose some of their summer fullness, add subtle decorations to your yard. A seasonal wreath on the front door or brand-new lighting can brighten the whole space. As the season changes, these simple tips will keep your yard looking pristine and inviting through autumn. So, prepare for a fall filled with nights under the stars, curled up in a nice yard chair, sipping on some warm cider.
