The Season of Giving

GIVING BACK THIS THANKSGIVING

The leaves have fallen, temperatures are continuing to drop, pumpkin spice everything is still flying off the shelves, and the holiday cheer is in the air. In fact, the Thanksgiving holiday season has arrived, and I couldn’t be more excited! Before we dive into the magic of the holidays and how we are giving back this season, I’d like to take a moment to report on the once-in-a-lifetime experience my husband and I shared with our friends in Montana. Hands down, the highlight of the trip was our daylong cattle drive at a dude ranch. All six of us enjoyed the experience, but let me tell you — it was work! We had to focus on the horses and our horseback-riding skills as we navigated through creeks and around trees and brush, but the hardest part might’ve been literally herding the cattle, who didn’t have much ambition. Some of them would just stare at you as you tried to get them through fences so they could enjoy greener pastures — it was like herding cats. If one went astray, we had to circle back and another one would then likely wander off course.

Some of the other highlights included ATV riding through the Bitterroot Mountains, panning for sapphires, and whitewater rafting. I collected roughly 60 karats worth of sapphires, but once the stones are processed to create jewelry, you wind up losing some of the karats. The trip was certainly one for the memory books and an amazing way to take us out of our comfort zones so we could explore some of the most beautiful landscapes in Montana. Back home, now that Thanksgiving is approaching, our office has been focused on showing our gratitude to our local community for their continued loyalty and for placing their trust in us. As part of our Patient of the Month Program, we make a charitable contribution to the charity the patient chooses in their name. We try to choose local charities to both help our community and to ensure that our contribution makes a greater impact. Over the past 12 months, some of the foundations we have assisted are:

• K9s for Warriors • American Heart Association • St. Jude Hospital • Waltham House (Home for Little Wanderers) • Breast Cancer Research Foundation • Franklin Food Pantry

• Dana-Farber Cancer Institute • Franklin Recreation Department • The Jimmy Fund • Medway Village Church Food Pantry • American Heart Association/American Stroke Association

Of course, this Christmas season, we will also be adopting a family or two through the Santa foundation where we fund the lists of area families in need. Having the opportunity to give back, especially during the holidays, is a rewarding and priceless experience. After all, it’s the season of giving. From our Professional Physical Therapy family to yours, happy Thanksgiving. We appreciate you and would like to thank you for your continued support and loyalty.

4 Benefits of Gardening for Seniors IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO GROW A GREEN THUMB!

Staying mentally and physically healthy doesn’t mean you have to attend a fancy gym or hire a lifestyle coach. You can enhance your overall health in your own backyard by starting a garden. It can offer a wide range of health benefits, and here are just a few. Gardening reduces stress and increases relaxation. Life can feel overwhelming. Many family, financial, or medical issues arise with age, and falling into a downward spiral is easy. Your first line of defense against stress can be your garden! Spending time outdoors has been proven to help older adults feel less stressed by promoting relaxation and lowering elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Gardens offer a place of quiet reprieve where you can take time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. Exercising never felt so green. Finding ways to stay active can be difficult, especially if mobility is an issue. Gardening can be a great way to keep active without the complications of rigorous activity. Simply moving plants around, creating holes for seeds, cultivating soil, or watering the garden are all great ways to maintain or improve strength. Eating healthy food contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is enhanced by what you eat. By devoting time to a garden, you can reap the health benefits of the delicious fruit and vegetables you grow there. Winter is quickly approaching, so consider which healthy crops to plant this time of year. Root vegetables like carrots, onions, garlic, and turnips are great options to start growing during November. These hearty vegetables are also excellent sources of fiber and essential nutrients. If you’re unsure where to start in your garden this season, you can refer to the 2022 Planting Guide in the almanac at Almanac.com/ gardening/planting-calendar. All it takes to start a garden is a seed, so plant a new, healthy lifestyle and watch it grow!

Carol came to physical therapy for her first number of visits in a wheelchair after surgery due to a broken bone. When she spoke about her activities and exercise that she wanted to return to, we knew she had a long way to go to achieve her goals. Four and a half months (and a lot of sweat and a few tears!) later, she has achieved those goals! In recognition of all of her hard work and dedication to her physical therapy and her home exercise program, Carol is our Patient of the Month!

Hold off on checking your phone. Upon waking up, don’t be in a hurry to check your phone, read emails, or pull up social media sites like Twitter and Instagram. Instead, take some time to plan your day, welcome positive thoughts, and focus on yourself and your family before diving into obligations and outside social interactions. Create a task list. Organization is key! Take the time to incorporate some planning into your mornings. What would you like to accomplish? What tasks need to be checked off your list? While spontaneity can be exciting sometimes, when it comes to your day-to-day life, it’s important to have a plan. Focus on gratitude. What are some things that you are thankful for? Each morning, take a moment or two to reflect on the things in your life that bring you joy that you are thankful for. This routine may seem small, but its benefits are huge.
