Blew House – Handbook for Boys August 2024

The Medical Centre

All boarders, whether full or weekly, should be registered with the College doctor, Dr Rosemary Leonard. The Old Diary Health Centre , 9B Croxted Road, London. SE21 8SZ Tel. No. 0208 761 8070. This will allow overseas boarders access to NHS Services.

The Medical Centre staff offer 24-hour qualified nurse care to boarders. The College doctors hold a surgery in the Medical Centre each weekday between 1.30 and 2pm. You may attend for a consultation without prior appointment. Boarders may attend the Medical Centre whenever they wish to do so during opening hours. This may be for specific medical or mental health issues. The Medical Centre team are experienced, very friendly and are passionate about providing the best possible care for all the boys.

You must make the Medical Centre aware of any prescribed drugs that you have brought from overseas.

If you feel ill or are injured you must go to the Medical Centre. If this happens after 6.30pm you must inform the duty tutor or Housemaster who will contact the nurse on duty.

If you feel unwell in the morning then you must go to breakfast and be dressed for school before attending the Medical Centre. You should be in the Medical Centre before registration.

You are not allowed to stay in bed in the boarding house during the day.

If it is appropriate, a bed will be provided for you in the Medical Centre.

If you attend the Medical Centre your Housemaster will be informed. If you do not want your housemaster to know then please discuss this with the nurse on duty.

If a boarder displays symptoms of diarrhoea and/or vomiting illness, rashes and skin infections, respiratory infections or other infections they may be excluded from school to prevent the spread of infection. In this case we may also require boarders to leave the boarding house and s tay with their guardians. Any boarder requiring dental, optical or hospital treatment may arrange this through the Medical Centre. Wherever possible the Medical Centre staff will escort them to any appointments. Information will be shared by the Medical Centre with the boarding house staff with the consent of the boarder. If the boarder does not wish this to happen, confidentiality will be maintained unless there are extenuating circumstances e.g. safeguarding issues.
